Post natal depression is a psychological illness that affects 15% of the female population after child-birth. It is described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition as depression with onset within 4 weeks after childbirth usually occurring around two weeks after childbirth and may last between a year and several months. Post natal depression symptoms are usually evident a few months following birth. Symptoms can include guilt, sadness, lack of energy and social withdrawal. This widely misunderstood mental disorder has been also referred to as post-partum depression or PPD, and is closely linked with clinical depression.

A number of risk factors have been identified that may contribute to the onset of post natal depression, with possible causes being attributed to the hormonal changes during pregnancy and the combination of the risk factors. Treatments are available through medical professionals and are most effective when administered as soon as symptoms are noticed.

Post natal depression is an illness associated with women. However, men are also prone to suffer from PPD with rates varying between 1.2 - 25% of the male population. The rates of women suffering are in the range of 5% - 25% with African-American women being the most at risk and Asian/pacific island peoples having the lowest occurrences. The significance of PPD is that this disorder is most likely to affect women in the post-birth period, and it is this period of time that women can expect the greatest risk of developing a psychologically damaging condition.

Symptoms of post natal depression

Post natal depression can be diagnosed by the combination of these symptoms to varying degrees of severity:

Sadness or crying
Feelings of Hopelessness
Low self-esteem
Guilt
A feeling of being overwhelmed
Sleep pattern disturbance and eating problems such as over-eating, weight gain or loss of appetite.
Exhaustion, fatigue and malaise
Emptiness
Anhedonia (the loss of interest in typically pleasurable activities)
Reduced social contact.
Increased anxiety or panic attacks
Lack of energy
Spells of anger towards others
Becoming easily frustrated
Feelings of inadequacy in terms of child rearing.
Impaired speech and writing
decreased desire for sex or intimacy.

Risk factors for post natal depression:
All women are at risk of developing post natal depression, with some women being more prone than others. Risk factors have been found that can markedly increase the chances of developing post natal depression:

Formula feeding rather than breast-feeding
smoking
Prenatal depression during pregnancy
A history of depression
Prenatal anxiety
Lack of social support
General stress related to relationships, the workplace or financial stress-ors.
Poor marital relationship
Infant temperament problems/colic
Single Marital Status
Low socio-economic status
Unplanned/unwanted pregnancy

Three risk factors have been identified that when combined have a big impact on the chances of developing PPD. These factors are: formula feeding, history of depression and smoking cigarettes.

The general conclusions of the risk factors studied pointed to poor social support network, lack of financial resources and either bi-sexual or lesbian sexuality preference were the factors most likely to contribute to developing post natal depression following child birth.

Causes of post natal depression

Lack of vitamins were first thought to be a cause of the illness, although it is now thought that a combination of hormonal changes following child-birth, combined with a number of risk factors such as low socio-economic status, poor social support and history of pre natal depression can place a certain percentage of women at a higher risk than others.

Treatments for post natal depression:

Treatments follow a careful diagnosis by a trained medical professional using The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, which is a standardised self-reported questionnaire.

After a diagnosis, a number of treatments are available. The two most widely used are CBT, or cognitive behavioural therapy, and anti-depressant medication or a combination of the two. Both CBT and anti-depressant medication are equally effective, and the preference is up to the patient as to which treatment would suit them best. Positive results are usually seen within 4 weeks, with some women taking longer than others to respond.

Other treatment options are stable sleep patterns, a nutritious diet ( omega 3's and b vitamins) and group therapy sessions.

Post natal depression is a widespread mental illness that affects women during the post birth period. Timely recognition and accurate diagnosis by a medical professional are key to bringing the condition under control, and restoring quality to ones life.

Sometimes it is really difficult to find out that what is wrong with you. You are sure that you have a problem but you don't know what it is. The only thought that comes into your mind again and again is that you can't do anything. You just try to find something to do and nothing attracts you anymore. Then the question comes into your mind - either it is depression or boredom?

Boredom means when you are totally free and looking here and there for something to do. People try to pass this time by watching T.V or overeating. It is an emotional stage during which people have lack of activities or don't enjoy the activities available around them. They fail to concentrate on the current activity and always try to find something new and interesting.

Whereas depression means lack of interest, energy and spark in your life. People suffering from depression make a hard shell around them and allows them to get out of neither it nor anybody get in. boredom can be controlled by so many ways but depression can not.

If you really want to come out of this confusion, you have to make a self-analysis. If you are having all the symptoms of depression like less sleep, less appetite, irritability, memory loss, loss of interest, thoughts of death and suicide etc., and then you must go for help.

Mild depression can be treated very easily but if it is severe and constant then you must seek medical help.

  1. Be especially kind to yourself in the first weeks after your baby is born. Your body has gone through huge changes and it's unrealistic to expect that you can snap back into your old shape straight away. Unrealistic expectations sets you up for failure and disappointment, but you CAN get your figure back if you are patient and take it one step at a time.

  2. Forget drastic dieting and treat your body to healthy nourishing food and gentle exercise to get back in shape. You will naturally lose some weight during the first few weeks as your uterus shrinks. Breast feeding alone will allow you to lose weight at 1lb a week if you eat normally and healthily as it uses up 500 calories a day, but you do need to eat enough so that your milk does not dry up. Plan on losing the remainder at a gentle pace.

  3. Your tummy will look very sad after the birth, flabby and saggy. Don't worry you can soon get things looking good again. Do all the post-natal exercises and gentle exercise recommended by your health-care professionals during the first 6 weeks to get your tummy back in shape. After that check with them that it is OK if you want to embark on a more strenuous exercise routine. Once your doctor says its OK to exercise, one of the best ways to retighten your muscles is a simple yoga move. Stand with your feet apart, hands on thighs. Breathe out fully and then pull your tummy muscles in and up as hard as you can, holding for a count of 10. If you do this a few times a day before breakfast you'll soon see results. Don't do this during pregnancy.

  4. The first few weeks with your baby are precious and not the time to start injuring yourself by doing too much too soon. Whatever you decide to do, don't go mad in the first week you're allowed to exercise normally. Build up gradually as if you'd not exercised before.

  5. If you are not able to get back to the gym or to do whatever activity you used to do now that you have a baby to care for, investigate home-exercise programs and videos you can do while your baby sleeps or organise your partner or friend to watch your baby for a short time while you exercise. You will need to be a bit more resourceful and determined to fit in your exercise but you can find a way if you really want to.

  6. Walking with your baby is always great - you both get fresh air and out of the house and you get fitter while your baby is soothed by the movement of the pram. You could also use a baby carrier to keep your baby close to you while you walk. This is especially soothing for a restless baby. Aim to walk for 30 minutes to an hour each day.

  7. You may find yourself tempted to snack more if you are alone at home with your baby especially if you are used to being out and about at work every day. Make sure you have lots of healthy snacks around such as fruit and avoid buying unhealthy snacks so you are not tempted. You may be better to plan 5 or 6 mini-meals rather than snacking all day AND having your usual lunch and dinner.

  8. Take the time to plan simple meals for the next few days before you go shopping. This will help you avoid the "What's for dinner"/"Oh no, I haven't defrosted it?" / "Better send out for pizza again" Syndrome. This is not the time to plan elaborate recipes but try and avoid too much processed junk food because you do have time for a simple omelette, pasta sauce, baked potato or salad

  9. If you start a plan to get in shape and it all feels like too much, simply restart it when you feel up to it - there's no need to beat yourself up over anything. Most women feel a bit tired and stressed with a new baby so don't put more pressure on yourself. All in good time. If you feel really down remember and seek help - post-natal depression is very real and quite common.

  10. Reward yourself. You've been through a lot - your body has changed, your hormones are in disarray. Whatever you do that helps towards getting back in shape (a walk, a healthy snack, your tummy exercises or whatever) give yourself a pat on the back. A few moments to yourself can be a great reward if you have someone who will care for your little one for a while.

  11. Bonus tip: Above all relax into your new life with your baby. You'll achieve nothing by worrying about your shape. Take time to rest and pamper yourself as much as possible. Sometimes you can feel quite neglected because your baby makes so many demands and this in itself can lead you to eat for comfort. Take care of your own needs. Ask for support from your partner. If you look after yourself by eating healthily and keeping up some gentle exercise you'll be fine and your weight will naturally rebalance itself over time.

If you have lost your joie de vivre, then there is every chance that you are deficient in the essential fatty acids required for regulating mood and for efficient functioning of the brain. It is now well documented that insufficient Omega 3 fatty acids in the diet not only leads to an increased risk of developing physical health problems like heart disease and atherosclerosis, but also to mood and learning related disorders.

Studies show that people who are suffering from depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, ADD, postnatal depression, PMS, dyslexia and many other mood and learning related disorders have low levels of the essential Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood. High levels of the equally essential but over abundant Omega 6 fatty acids have also been found. This imbalance can turn out to be extremely debilitating for some, or it could simply mean low moods, an inability to concentrate and focus, irritability and a general feeling of malaise for others.

Over the past 70 years or so, we have dramatically increased our consumption of Omega 6 and all but annihilated our intake of Omega 3 and the staggering reality is that very few of us are actually getting the amount of Omega 3 we need. Fish oil contains the Omega 3 fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both of which are vital for healthy brain development and function. Putting physical health problems aside, those of us who have low blood levels of Omega 3 are more likely to adopt a negative outlook on life, to behave impulsively and to feel depressed according to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh.

It stands to reason that if we increase our intake of Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil, then we might be able to improve mood and reduce, eliminate or even prevent many of the symptoms associated with a lack of these fatty acids. And this is exactly what researchers have found.

What the research says...

o According to a study led by Lawrence Whalley, a mental health professor at Aberdeen University, fish oil appears to help the brain to work faster, it increases IQ scores and slows down the ageing process by reducing inflammation.

o The Durham trials led by Dr Madeleine Portwood have consistently shown that fish oil with a high EPA content improves behaviour, concentration and learning resulting in better grades at school. o Adelaide University, who also used high EPA fish oil, claimed it to be an effective treatment for ADHD.

o Research led by Dr Andrew Stoll looked at the effect of Omega 3 fatty acids on Bipolar disorder and found that fish oil reduced the severity of the symptoms.

o Hibbeln et al found a direct link between lower fish consumption and the risk of developing postnatal depression and that research spanned 22 countries.

o An Italian study by Fontani et al concluded that Omega 3 supplementation improves complex cortical processing with improvements in mood and a reduction in anger, anxiety and depression

These examples represent only a fraction of the studies conducted but they demonstrate just how effective fish oil can be in positively influencing mood and mental functioning.

But one of the biggest studies to date on the effect of Omega 3 fatty acids on depression was conducted by Malcolm Peet at Sheffield University who found that ethyl-EPA, a highly concentrated and purified form of the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA, dramatically reduced depression. He, along with a growing number of others, now believe that EPA is the fatty acid primarily responsible for the profound effect on mood and brain functioning and not DHA as once was thought.

EPA versus DHA

Although we need both EPA and DHA equally, as Ralph Holman, an expert on fatty acids once said "DHA is structure and EPA is function". We need DHA for the proper development of the brain during pregnancy and through the first few years of life, but the rest of the time we need EPA for the brain to function efficiently. Some research has also indicated that the presence of DHA might actually interfere with the beneficial properties of EPA making it somewhat less effective than fish oil with a very high EPA content.

How EPA works

No one yet knows exactly how EPA works, but it is believed to reduce inflammation, thin the blood, increase serotonin levels, and improve blood flow to the brain leading to greater inter-connectivity in the neural networks. EPA and other fatty acids we consume compete with each other to be converted into eicosanoids. These hormone-like compounds will either be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory depending on the type of fatty acid that dominated at the time, for example, Omega 3 or Omega 6.

As EPA is constantly being used up as it were, we need to replenish our supplies in order to inhibit overproduction of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, which is known to put us at greater risk of depression and other health problems. Conclusion

Fish oil may not be a panacea for mental health problems, but there is little doubt that supplementing with fish oil high in EPA has the ability to improve mental functioning and to make a profound difference to the symptoms associated with mood related conditions like depression.

Everyone needs to use stress reduction techniques. Since we live in such a fast-paced world, I wouldn't be surprised if even ten-year-olds are feeling stressed out now. Our lifestyles haven't exactly been the healthiest in the last 50 years either. There's hardly anything we can do to reverse the situation. However, there are some practices we can do to help lessen stress in our daily life.

So what options do you have? Luckily, there are simple everyday stress reduction techniques you can use to minimize stress' effects. These suggestions are quite simple and applicable to anyone regardless of age or gender.

Stress Reduction Technique # 1: Put some relaxing music on.
Music has a lot of relaxing qualities, depending on the person you are. If you feel most relaxed listening to ballads, then why don't you pop your favorite CD in your CD player? These days, there are also special CDs made for relaxation. These CDs mimic the sound of soft rain or the sound of waves. I highly recommend these nature sounds to help you combat stress. If you have an iPod, you can easily look for these kinds of sounds on the Internet.

Stress Reduction Technique # 2: Goodnight and sleep tight.
Sleep has always been a reliable method to overcome stress. Getting sufficient sleep does wonders for the black rings under your eyes and for your stress levels. However, different people have different sleep needs; some may need only 6 hours or less of shut-eye, while others need around 8 hours or more. You should therefore try out different sleep routines, and discover for yourself the optimal hours of sleep you need to wake up feeling refreshed and energized. Sleeping gives your body time to recuperate. If you're feeling overly stressed, why don't you go home early one day and make sure you get a good night's sleep? It's one of the cheapest luxuries you'll ever experience.

Stress Reduction Technique # 3: Take your vitamins.
Taking multi-vitamins is good for your health and well-being. Vitamins help strengthen your immune system which makes you less vulnerable to stress. Vitamin B Complex, for example, fortifies your nerves and helps you deal with stress better. Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins C (citrus fruits) and E (found in nuts and whole grains) do a great deal to keep your body in top shape. Fruits and vegetables are also a good source of antioxidants. If you don't like to take vitamins, you can also substitute them with natural herbs. Ginseng, for example, is known to help reduce stress without any harmful consequences to your body.

These everyday stress reduction techniques are easy enough to include in your everyday routine. Don't take your body for granted. Always take good care of it and it will serve you well in the long run.

Dates are the fruits of the date palm tree which is a food of high nutritional value. They are used abundantly in the month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The sweetness of the date takes the edge off hunger and this is another reason why fasts are opened with dates. This prevents a person from overeating after he has opened his fast.

Dates contain calcium, sulphur, iron, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, magnesium, volatile oils, Vitamin-B6, folic acid, Potassium, Iron and Magnesium, proteins, sugars, vitamins and are rich in natural fibers which contribute to a healthy body and mind.

Dates provides natural sugar in the form of glucose and fructose which is ready for immediate absorption and, is infinitely far superior to cane-sugar.

Eating dates has great benefits which can be illustrated as follows:

Prevents Cancer: Dates are very nutritious and contain natural fibres. Modern medicine has shown that they are effective in preventing abdominal cancer. In general Bedouin Arabs, who eat them on a regular basis, show an extremely low incidence rate of cancer.

Weak heart: Dates are an excellent remedy for weak heart. Dates soaked overnight should be taken twice a week which strengthens the heart.
Bedouin Arabs who regularly consume dates have shown an extremely low rate of heart disease.

Treatment for Obesity: The wide variety of nutritious elements in dates makes it hunger-resistive! So treatment by eating few dates when feeling hungry helps reduce hunger and be filled. These dates will provide the body with the necessary sugar and stimulate the intestine which reduce hunger greatly, and eventually, reduce food consumption.

Eases child-birth: Eating dates eases the pain of childbirth. Scientifically they are known to contain hormones which strengthen the uterus, help produce milk for nursing mothers and also prevent blood loss after childbirth. (The ripe fruit contains a substance that urges uterine spasms and increases contractions especially in the time of delivery. This substance resembles 'oxytocin' that is secreted by pituitary gland, which encourages contractions of the uterus. Dates contain some stimulants which strengthen the muscles of the uterus in the last months of pregnancy. This helps the dilation of the uterus at the time of delivery and reduces post-natal bleeding).

Ideal for breast-feeding mothers: Dieticians consider dates the best food for breast-feeding mothers. This is because dates contain elements that assist in alleviating depression and enrich the breast milk with the nutrients needed to make the child healthy and resistant to disease.

Bones: Calcium is important for strong bones so this is an additional benefit that dates provide. As dates are rich in calcium, they contribute to healthy bones. For this reason it is recommended that children and older adults, especially women, eat plenty of dates to strengthen their bones.

Modern science has also proved the effectiveness of dates, in preventing diseases of the respiratory system.

Intestinal Disturbances: Eating dates in the morning on an empty stomach kills intestinal worms and other parasites, for dates have an antidotal potency which restrains their growth. According to Metchnikoff, a great Russian scientist, liberal use of dates keeps in check the growth of pathological organisms and helps to establish a colony of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

Improves Eye sight: Dates are also important in maintaining good vision and are effective in guarding against night-blindness.

Cures constipation: Dates are also highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels. They should be immersed in water at night and taken after making them into fine syrup the next morning to secure laxative effect.

Remedy for Sexual Debility: Date syrup can be used as a treatment for weak heart. It can also be use for the treatment of sexual weakness. When it's mixed with milk and honey, dates can be used as a tonic for the treatment of sexual disturbances for both sexes. And such syrup strengthens the body and raises its energy levels. The elderly would benefit from this syrup too. It improves their stamina and purges their bodies from the toxins that have accumulated in their cells along the years.

Remedy for Liver and Inflammations: Dates remedy Lever and purge it from toxins, Breaking the fast with dates, is one of the most magnificent of natural remedies for the maintenance and purging the Lever from accumulated toxins. And also drinking dates juice could be used in the treatment of sore throat, various types of fever, rhinorrhia and common cold.

Remedy for Intoxication: Dates are an excellent remedy for alcoholic intoxication. In such a case, drinking water in which fresh dates have been rubbed or soaked will bring quick relief

Children's Disease: Dates tied to a wrist of the baby and allowed to be sucked during teething period hardens the gums and also prevents other complaints like restlessness and diarrhea.

In short sentence, one date satisfies the minimum requirements of a balanced and healthy diet - so cultivating a healthy habit of eating dates miraculously preserves our health and attains longevity.

"I'm pregnant and I'm taking antidepressants. Is it safe to take it?" In my line of work I hear this question quite often: The answer is "No."

Before you decide to throw away your medication away, I want you to consider this: Is it safe to stop my antidepressants now that I'm pregnant? Also, "No."

Confused?

Antidepressants are a special kind of medication. You can take anti-cholesterol medication for years and years, and not feel any difference. When you stop taking you anti-cholesterol medication, you most probably still feel the same. Taking antidepressants are different. When you start taking your anti-depressant, you feel different; hopefully better. Most antidepressants work by affecting the levels of transmitters such as serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain. By taking anti-depressants, you may find you function better, have less mood swings, feel better.

And then you decide to stop.

Dizziness, uncomfortable tingly sensations, anxiousness, aggression, confusion, 'electric-shock' sensations... These are some of the withdrawal effects you can experience if you stop taking your antidepressants abruptly. By suddenly stopping your antidepressant you cause your brain transmitter levels to go out of whack, and you may find that you start feeling these withdrawal effects even after missing just one or two doses. People taking antidepressants with short half lives (i.e. they are removed from the body faster) such as venlafaxine (Efexor簧) or paroxetine (Aropax簧) are more likely to experience withdrawal effects when they stop suddenly. If you stop your antidepressant abruptly without consulting a doctor, you may even become suicidal.

When you become pregnant, the last thing you want to do is stop your antidepressant abruptly. The first thing you should do when you find out you're pregnant is to book an appointment with your GP to discuss your options. Taking antidepressants during pregnancy may not be ideal, but neither is stopping abruptly. You doctor will consider YOU as an individual, look at your history of depression (and your family history), and the type of antidepressant you are taking, and together you and your doctor will decide the SAFEST course of action. For example, you may be taking a low strength of an antidepressant and be functioning well, but if you stop your antidepressant abruptly, you may be likely to fall back into a depressive state during your pregnancy, and may be at risk of endangering yourself and your baby. In this case it may be a safer option to continue your antidepressant during the pregnancy, and your doctor may decide to gradually withdraw your antidepressant closer to your delivery date. Gradual tapering of antidepressants reduces the risk of prominent withdrawal effects, and you may find during gradual withdrawal that you feel nothing more than a slight 'hangover'.

If you have been on antidepressants for a long time and your doctor feels that if you are to gradually stop your antidepressant during pregnancy, you are unlikely to fall back into a depressive state (perhaps you have strong family support now, or a less stressful job and therefore are less likely to become depressed again), you may have the option of ceasing your antidepressant. You may need to undergo a specific reducing regime of your antidepressant that may include halving your dose every one to two weeks until you can stop, but remember that the longer the reducing regime, the less likely you will experience withdrawal effects. After ceasing your medication, you may like to trial cognitive behavioural therapy to control your depression.

Another option may be to switch to a safer alternative. Paroxetine, classed as a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI), should NOT be used during pregnancy as studies have shown that babies are more likely to be born with a birth defect or heart defect. Other SSRIs are considered safer and may be an alternative during pregnancy, if your doctor decides that continuing your medication is the safer option for you.
If you have just become pregnant and are taking antidepressants, your course of action would not be the same as the next pregnant woman on antidepressants. There are many options out there, I have named a few. To find the best option for you, book an appointment with your GP this week and get the ball rolling.

For years I've prided myself on believing that I take a very natural approach to the wellness of me and my family. However, I recently ventured into the aromatherapy market and found out, much to my dismay, that I was wrong. One of the primary "no nos" was air fresheners. Let's not even get started with all the petrochemicals and other chemicals that are in our other products like lotion, shampoo, conditioners, household cleaners, laundry detergents, and well you get the picture.

However, I thought that air freshener weren't TOO bad, were they? Oh I was so wrong! I read an article recently by Lesley Grimwood, a registered aromatherapist and member of the Aromatherapy and Allied Practitioners Association. What I read convinced me further that aromatherapy is not just something to be taken lightly and sniffed at! I recommend you find her article and read it thoroughly. (Air Fresheners - Not To Be Sniffed At).

Unfortunately, now the word "aromatherapy" is being applied so loosely in our sales and marketing that "true" aromatherapy may have noses turned up at it because using quality essential oils cost quite a bit more. In fact, if you'll notice the word aromatherapy is being applied to so many things including, yes, air fresheners.

What I found out from Lesley Grimwood's article was that these so-called air fresheners are really just odor "disguisers" full of chemicals that are causing some maladies to occur in us. Since reading her article I really went proactive and decided that we would be ridding our home of all of these chemical-laden products. We did so in our yards, laundry products, cleaning, and now personal products. Every single one of the chemicals in these products, especially all the petrochemicals, invades our bodies and they don't leave unless we do a thorough detoxification! Our poor pets suffer even more because they can get the chemicals we use on our floors into their bodies through their feet!

Here's what was found in the Bristol University study on 14,000 pregnant women mentioned in Leslie Grimwood's article: those who used air fresheners daily suffered 25 percent more headaches than those who only used them once per week. It also reported a 19% increase in post-natal depression, and the babies suffered too. Those under 6 months who were exposed daily to the air fresheners suffered 30% more ear infections and 20 percent were more likely to suffer from diarrhea.

Further findings how found how these air fresheners that are supposed to make our homes smell better and in the commercials give us the impression that we will FEEL better, do almost the opposite actually. The findings showed that there was increased anxiety, tension, headaches, depression, insomnia, diarrhea, etc. THAT is supposed to make us feel better?

Well, I have found the better alternative to these horrible air fresheners - essential oils diffused through a cold-air diffuser or mixed with spring water in an amber glass spray bottle. The incredibly great thing is that when essential oils are diffused into the air they don't just make the air seem fresher, the air IS fresher. Different ones do different things but they do affect every facet of your body in a positive, healing way. The oils when diffused can be into every cell of your body within seconds.

The essential oils have adaptagenic qualities so that they seek out where they are needed in the body. An essential oil is the lifeforce of the plant similar to our blood and immune system so they adapt very well in our bodies. They don't harm our bodies like the chemicals in these air fresheners are doing. Rather, they are helping our bodies while cleaning the air. Yes, I say CLEANING. The air really IS fresh after a diffusing of your favorite essential oils into the air.

Essential oils oxygenate and detoxify the blood in our bodies simultaneously. They create an environment where pathogenic organisms cannot live! With all the chemicals we're getting into our bodies through all the products we have in our homes, in our yards, in our air, in our foods, our bodies are degenerating because they cannot get rid of these toxins without help. This then can lead to disease.

However, when we inhale the essential oils either through a diffuser or directly or even by applying them to our bodies (I even ingest orally some of the ones I use as does my husband and our dog) the oils cross the blood-brain barrier and clean out the petrochemicals! They're the only known substances that are able to do this! And you just thought they smelled good!

So the next time you want to freshen things up in your home, try an essential oil instead and have true clean air!

DISCLAIMER: The only oils we use and refer to in ALL our articles are Young Living Essential Oils. We DO NOT use any others and do not state what we do about using essential oils in our articles about any other brands.

We know that babies remember their birth. We also know that mothers remember the birth of each child and frequently wish the birth had been managed differently. What may not be so well known is the impact of the birth on the new or growing family. Issues such as post-natal depression, marital disharmony, and lack of ability to bond with the new baby are all more common after a birth that was not satisfying to the mother.

When parents confidently participate in all the decisions made during labour and delivery, they are far more likely to look back on the birth with no regrets. It may be that the parents will elect to have a managed birth directed by medical staff, and if that is their active choice, they may well be content with the outcome.

However, the administration of any drug brings with it the possibility of undesirable side effects. Pethidine, known as Meperidine in the United Sates, meptazinol, usually called Meptid, and Diamorphine are three systemic opioids commonly used for pain relief in labour. The side effects of these drugs may include nausea, vomiting and drowsiness in the mother, and depression of the baby's respiratory system. These side effects may impact on the baby's ability to feed after birth, as it is likely she will be sleepy.

Is it possible to use the body's own natural system of relaxation and pain relief? What is the cause of the pain and discomfort that women routinely experience during childbirth?

At the beginning of the 20th Century, an English doctor named Grantly Dick-Read began to answer these questions. As a result of close observations of women in labour he formulated the theory of "Fear - Tension -Pain - Syndrome." His primary premise was that fear causes tension within the body, particularly within the uterus, and that tension inhibits the natural birthing process, prolonging labour and causing pain.

His theories have subsequently been proven to be correct by the work of Marie Mongan, director of the HypnoBirthing Institute.

The system she has developed is a complete antenatal education that is now taught around the world, allowing parents to prepare for the safe and calm birth of their child. At all times during the Hypno Birthing course, and indeed during the Hypno Birth itself, the mother is awake and fully aware of what is happening.

It requires a degree of commitment from parents, as the course is taught over a series of five lessons of about two and a half hours each. Mothers and partners are taught the arts of relaxation and visualisation, techniques that are just as helpful after the birth as before, as shown in the following comments:

"HypnoBirthing showed us how to embrace labour with a positive mental attitude. The techniques helped me tremendously with my labour, and also caring for Noah after his arrival."

"My opinion of HypnoBirthing is very high, it kept me calm and focussed throughout my labour."

"HypnoBirthing techniques greatly aided my ability to deal with the situation."

It is important to find a qualified HypnoBirthing instructor, as this programme really is a complete antenatal education. It will lead to the most natural and pain free birth of which the mother's body is capable, and positive, satisfying birth memories.

Fathers and partners are fully involved, thus setting the scene for the development of a fully functioning, positive, family life after the baby is born.

Pole dancing can effectively facilitate weight loss and shape muscles due to its mixture of strength training and cardiovascular exercise, the result is a sexy body. The sport tones up the whole body giving beautiful definition to the arms, thigh, abdominals and shoulders. Many participants claim that it improves confidence, self - esteem, body awareness and body shape. Many people have recovered from post natal depression and eating disorders due to the profound effect this sport has on a women's self-esteem and mental health.

For the past few years, pole fitness lessons have been offered by gyms, dance schools, bars and dedicated pole fitness studios. Some people have learned to dance on their pole at home. Pole fitness studios offer just pole dancing lessons whereas others offer a wide range of exercise classes including yoga, flexibility, strength and cardio classes. Some classes are just about learning pole tricks and spins and others teach you how to link the moves together to make short dance routines so that you get a cardiovascular workout as well.

Pole fitness today is extremely popular and very big business. Despite its wide availability some countries still do not have access to pole fitness instructors so lessons are not available and not everyone can make the sessions due to the day and times that they are available.

If you are unable to have lessons in the traditional way then why not learn at home with online pole dancing lessons? Online lessons are generally taught in 3 levels; beginner, intermediate and advanced. Many online lessons also provide strengthening and flexibility exercises and some teach you short routines so you learn the art of pole dancing and not just the tricks. Some ladies chose to enrol in online pole dancing lessons because they have small children at home and can't make lessons, there are no lessons available in their area or they prefer to learn on their own, from the comfort of their own home.

The benefits of online pole dancing lessons are that you can learn at your own pace, at a time convenient to you whilst getting all the benefits of attending lessons. Taking part in online lessons will lead to weight loss and it will shape your muscles resulting to a sexy body. The lessons will tone up your whole body giving beautiful definition to the arms, thigh, abdominals and shoulders. You may experience an improvement in your confidence and self - esteem as well.

The only disadvantage of online lessons is that you miss out on the social interaction with new people however some providers of online pole dancing lessons also provide online chat rooms and forums that you can meet people, share your experiences or ask for advice and tips.

Online pole dancing lessons are the way to learn if you don't live near any pole dancing studios or gyms which offer lessons in this discipline. You can also take these online lessons if you want a few extra lessons outside of your weekly lessons or your pole fitness course. Taking online lessons in addition to your weekly lessons may speed up your progression through the levels.

Imagine building a house without some of the essential materials. Well it simply wouldn't work, it would be leaky, drafty, insufficiently insulated, and would probably collapse during the first storm.

Our cells are no different to a house. They all have a blueprint (DNA) and are meant to be constructed according to the plan. However when the body makes a request for a particular nutrient to complete the cell construction, it's gets a message that the reserves are empty or being held only for the key organs, needed to keep you alive.

One of those essential nutrients are 'Essential Fatty Acids' - Essential because our body can't make them, so we need to get them from food. Essential fatty acids (EFA's) are necessary for;

- Normal brain and nervous system function
- Visual acuity and cognition
- Hormone and prostaglandin regulation
- Healthy placental growth
- Brain and liver development in the foetus

The central nervous system starts to develop 21 days after conception; because of this it is essential that the mother's reserves are optimal before conception.

EFA's are also very important for;

- The health of breasts and mammary glands
- Growth of the uterus in the mother

EFA's can protect against SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and post natal depression and have been found to be effective in the treatment of endometriosis, heavy periods, cramping and mild depression. Deficiency has been linked to male infertility and can lead to congenital malformations and spontaneous abortions. Omega 3 and 6 are known as EFA's. Omega 6 is readily available in food (nuts and seeds and vegetable oils) but Omega 3 is harder to come by and the need for Omega 3 increases during pregnancy and lactation.

Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), are the building blocks of membranes of all cells in the body, and precursors of eciosanoids, hormones important in the prevention and treatment of many diseases, especially in women.

For example period crams a.k.a. dysmenorrhea, stem from disturbed balance between anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory hormones. By increasing the intake of omega 3 fatty acids your period cramps can vanish.

I speak here from first hand experience. As a teenager, I couldn't leave the house without a Ponstan (a painkiller) on the first day of my period. When I learned at college about omega 3's I started taking the supplement every day and within 2 cycles I never had to use Ponstan again, my cramps were gone.

Studies have shown that omega 3 fatty acids;

" Facilitate pregnancy in women with infertility problems by increasing uterine blood flow.
" Promote fetal growth by improving placental blood flow.
" Lower the risk of premature birth, by increasing the length of pregnancy and birth weight.
" Facilitate the child's brain development.
" Prevent preeclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy).
" Prevent postpartum depression.
" Prevent menopausal problems.
" Prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis.
" Prevent breast cancer.
" Lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL) - this is especially

important for women receiving hormone therapy, which can increase bad cholesterol.

Buyer Beware

When buying Omega 3 Fish oils, you need to make sure the product;

1. Contains antioxidants to prevent the oil from oxidizing and going rancid

(a.k.a. lipid peroxidation).
2. Has been tested for mercury, dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls (PBCs), and

meets the established safety limits.

Fish that live a long time (e.g. swordfish, shark & tuna) have a longer time to accumulate environmental toxins. Try to make sure your fish oil comes from wild sardines or wild salmon.

What we all need to be mindful of, is, the ever increasing demand for the ocean fish reserves. Studies have shown, worldwide, the demand for wild fish is now greater than the ocean can supply and projections suggest complete reliance on aquaculture (farmed fish) by 2050.

A solution to this problem is Krill Oil - abundant zooplankton found in the Antarctic waters. Krill Oil is eaten by whales and other fish. It possesses a fatty acid profile comparable with fish oils. It is a more sustainable solution comparable to fish oils.

How much do you need?

The recommended therapeutic dose of Omega 3 (RTD) is 1000mg three times per day, with food. Never have them on an empty stomach, as they won't absorb properly.

How do you store it?

In the fridge.

If you get fishy burps, you can put it in the freezer and have the capsules frozen, this way they'll thaw out in your small intestines instead of your stomach.

Food Sources

Deep sea fish, wild salmon, red snapper, wild trout, herring, halibut, sardines, walnuts, almonds, nuts, seeds, flaxseed oil (only 20% gets converted into the active form), grass fed meat, hemp seed oil.

To learn if it's really true and to understand better if this program can help your child too, lets talk about some of the pros and cons of Dr. Blaise Ryan's program.

The Happy Child Guide Review - The Pros And Cons

The Pros

Very Comprehensive Program

One of the biggest advantages of the Happy Child Guide program is the fact that it is a comprehensive system and much more than just a parenting guide.

In addition to the main guide, Dr. Blaise Ryan's system also contains very useful components such as: 7 week e-coaching course about effective alternatives to punishment, several interviews with parenting experts in MP3 format, 6 exclusive bonus guides on teaching children respect, post-natal depression and many more.

The Cons

It Is Not A Miracle Cure

One thing to remember is that this program is not a "miracle cure" and in most cases it will take a lot of practice and discipline to begin seeing positive changes, so don't expect to see changes in your child's misbehavior in only few days.

Less Effective For Children Who Are Over 11 Years Old

Dr. Blaise Ryan specially designed his program for parenting children until age 11 and the methods inside his guide are less effective for teens.

The Happy Child Guide Review - The Bottom Line

Overall, there is no doubt that the Happy Child Guide is one of the most popular parenting programs on the internet these days for a good reason and this program can really help you to transform your child's inappropriate behavior permanently.

However, don't forget that Dr. Blaise Ryan's program is not a "magic pill" and if you think that your child's misbehavior will disappear in only 24 hours when using this program, then the Happy Child Guide is probably not for you.

I Hope that this Happy Child Guide review was helpful for you, all the best!

I heard about a woman who was suffering from depression, so her concerned husband took her to a psychiatrist. The doctor listened to the couple talk about their relationship, and then he said, "The treatment I prescribe is really quite simple." With that, he went over to the man's wife, gathered her up in his arms, and gave her a big kiss. He then stepped back and looked at the woman's glowing face and broad smile. Turning to the woman's husband, he said, "See! That's all she needs to put new life back into her." Expressionless, the husband said, "If you say so, Doc, I can bring her in on Tuesdays and Thursdays."

Okay, that's not how to treat depression, but I have a few other suggestions that make more sense. As a result of trial and error, over the course of thirty years, I've found ten blues battling strategies that often help me. These are not quick fixes, and this list is not exhaustive. It is also not a "must do" list.

When you're depressed, the last thing you need is a list of expectations to live up to. Don't stress about forcing yourself to accomplish all these things. They're not items to be checked off a list each day. The only one that is crucial is number one. After that, you can experiment with the others as you feel able to.

1) Get the Facts and Get Help.

Web sites and books on depression abound. Find them and do some research. You need to know what you're dealing with. Learn all you can about depression, so you can make educated decisions about your own health, learn how others cope, and find what medical treatment is available. Many books have self tests to help you determine whether you are experiencing clinical depression or temporary sadness in reaction to an event. In addition to reading everything you can get your hands on, one of the most important things you can do for yourself is seek medical help right away. Depression is much too complicated for you to solve on your own. Clinical depression is a serious medical condition that is very complicated to treat. Often it is a physical problem that requires long term medication. In my own experience, it's taken years of medication, counseling, and practicing various self help methods to slowly emerge from it, and it's still a daily battle.

Many people suffer needlessly from depression because they won't consult a doctor. If you're waiting for God to heal you, consider this: God gives scientists intelligence, which they often use to create helpful medicines; and He gives doctors wisdom to treat illnesses. Wise doctors and modern medicines are gifts from God and vehicles through which He often heals. Doctors can help you determine whether what you feel is truly depression, or if you are just reacting normally to a sad life situation.

If you've experienced depression, you already know it is not an illness you can "snap out of," no matter what others may tell you. It's not something to be ashamed of either. Depression can be a serious physical illness caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals or other factors. Like any serious medical condition, depression needs to be treated. Without the proper treatment, none of my suggested coping strategies will do any good.

2) Get Focused.

Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness pervade the life of a depressed person. The opposite of depression is a hopeful attitude. Focusing on hope and developing a hopeful heart is a must. It can be accomplished in a couple ways. One way is to search the Bible for the numerous Scriptures that tell how God has helped those who felt hopeless. It's helpful to memorize verses like these: Hebrews 4:15 (For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.); 2 Corinthians 4:8 & 9 (All-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.); Matthew 6:34 (Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.); Isaiah 41:10 (Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.); and John 14:27 (Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.).

The story of Job and the book of Psalms are the most worn pages in my Bible. While at my lowest, I've read and re-read them more times than I can count. My fridge and the mirrors in my house are covered with sticky notes reminding me of how God intervenes in the lives of His people.

Another way to focus on hope is by practicing positive self talk. This simply means telling yourself good things. I made a list for myself of positive affirmations like "God cares and understands my pain. God values me. God is giving me strength. I am made in God's image. I can choose my attitude. I choose not to put myself down. I'm a worthwhile person. I have a purpose. I enjoy life. I choose to be happy and I am competent." If you struggle with depression, I think you'll find it helpful to write down as many of these affirmations as you can think of and read them every day. Even if they're not currently true or you don't really believe them, it's okay. Say them to yourself anyway. Your mind will come to believe what you tell it, so tell it you are already the type of person you want to become. Be sure to remind yourself often that God is with you and He is pouring his strength on you. "Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance. ...For You are the God of my strength..." (Psalm 42:5 and 43:2 NKJV)

2 Corinthians 4:18 says we need to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." Focusing on positive, heavenly things rather than earthly things will keep the feelings of hopelessness at bay.

3) Get Friendly.

Fellowship with other people is a mood lifter. Being alone is the worst thing you can do when you're depressed. Unfortunately, it's usually the very thing I want most. Depression grows best in isolation. I find it very difficult to get out and socialize when I'm depressed, but if I push myself to do it, I'm almost always glad later. Some ideas for socializing include joining a club, taking a class, inviting someone to meet you for lunch, or visiting a nursing home to chat with the residents there. It especially helps me to be with friends who enjoy the same hobbies I do. Shopping, watching movies, and rubber stamping are some of the things I enjoy doing alone, but they're twice as much fun when I do them with friends.

4) Get Giggling.

I collect cartoons and funny newspaper columns. I visit humor web sites online, watch funny movies, and read funny books. Best of all is laughing with friends. One of the reasons I enjoy my grandson so much is because he makes me laugh. I can act goofy with him and let go of my inhibitions. We dance and sing and make up silly rhymes. I have photographs of us wearing funny glasses with big black mustaches. I laugh every time I look at those. Laughing affects brain chemicals. It releases endorphins, which make you feel good. Chocolate does the same thing, but a good laugh is less fattening.

A friend of mine, who had a very frustrating job, told me that one day she was inspired by someone who had a huge, bright smile. She decided to emulate that woman and smile at everyone she encountered. Right away, she realized that smiling was addictive. It seemed to make the time pass more quickly and she found herself less frustrated and more at peace. She told me, "It sounds corny, but it really works!"

Paul wrote, "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4 NKJV) I've heard that a person can act her way into feeling better. Act happy, act glad, and it helps you to feel happy and glad. Paul exhibited this truth in his own life. Acts 16 tells how Paul and Silas were attacked, beaten, locked in stocks, and thrown into solitary confinement. Yet, at midnight, what were they doing? Feeling sorry for themselves? Asking God, "Why?" Moaning and complaining like I do? No, they were singing! Sure they were suffering, but they knew they were children of God. Paul may have even been remembering his personal encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. (Acts 22:10) They were praising God because they had been rescued from their sins, filled by the Holy Spirit, and added to God's family. No jailer could take that away. That was worth being grateful for, no matter what else happened to them. Even if they were to be killed, it would only send them to heaven. So why should they fear? That's some awesome faith, isn't it?

5) Get Rhythm.

When I feel a case of the gloomies descending, that is not the time to play melancholy music. Positive upbeat tunes are in order -- the sort of music you might hear at a parade or a circus. Music gets your toes tapping and your blood flowing. It makes you want to sing. Singing and dancing sends a message to your brain that you're happy. Your brain is an actualizer. Whatever it "thinks" is true, it works to bring about. This is why positive thinking works. You tell yourself, "I'm happy" often enough and your brain accepts it as fact. It actualizes that truth, making it happen. I've found that when depression takes hold of me, I tend to ruminate on negative thoughts. Listening to good, Christian music with positive lyrics helps to pour good things into my brain and crowd those negative things out. There's a list of good things to ponder in the fourth chapter of Paul's letter to the Philippian church. It says to think about whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, noble, right, or admirable. Philippians 4:8 says, "If anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things." Christian music helps me accomplish this.

6) Get Busy

We all need to feel like we're involved in something significant. We need to participate in something outside ourselves. You might consider volunteering at a local women's shelter or food pantry. I've enjoyed both and discovered that when I stay busy helping others and concentrating on their problems, I get a break from focusing on my own troubles. This is how HUGS and HOPE began. It started with a small effort to make a difference for one family and it grew. I've learned that joy boomerangs. When you give it away, it comes back to you. Helping others gives you the heart-warming satisfaction of knowing you are making a difference in the world. That will elevate your mood as well as your self esteem.

7) Get Physical

This is two-fold. Physical exercise is good for us, but physical contact is equally important. Our bodies need to move to be healthy, and going for a walk is the easiest exercise for me to do when I'm depressed. It doesn't require as much energy and motivation as other activities. Breathing the fresh air and looking at the beauty of nature can be helpful, and taking my dog along is even better. Just watching his ears flop as he bounces down the road in front of me often brings a smile to my face.

Exercise affects brain chemicals, and the healing touch of physical closeness does too. If you're depressed, hug somebody - anybody, everybody! A hug is good medicine. It reduces stress and tension and it boosts your immunity to illness. Hugs raise self esteem and lower blood pressure. They feel good and make people happy. And they're free! Hugs are the universal language that communicates love and acceptance. They're healthy for the "hugger" as well as the "hugee."

8) Get Quiet

I need to lean heavily on God's word and spend time with Him. When I pray, I talk things over with God. When I read the Bible and meditate on it, I hear Him speak to me and I contemplate what He says. I've found this to be one of the best anti-depressants there is. However, I need to add a word of caution here. Too much solitude can worsen depression. Isolating yourself and avoiding people can make depression grow. Don't use meditation time as an excuse to avoid human contact. Time with God is of the utmost importance, but balance between quiet time alone and time spent with others is essential.

9) Get Forgiveness - And Give it Too!

I've read that many psychiatrists agree that depression is guilt or anger turned inward. David is an example of someone whose guilt led to depression. After committing adultery, he wrote, "When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer." (Psalm 32:3-4)

Sin makes you feel bad, but when you receive God's forgiveness, your guilt is removed; and often depression is removed too.

Depression can sometimes be caused from the need to forgive someone else or yourself (whomever is making you angry). Grudges cause feelings of frustration, which aggravate the hopeless feelings of depression. When we forgive, we let go of past hurts and give up bitterness. Then depression has no negativity on which to feed. If you free yourself from feelings of hate and open yourself up to feelings of love, you may feel as if the depression is physically lifting off your shoulders.

My friend Nance went through a difficult divorce, which left her bitter about the past, anxious about the future, and miserable in general. She harbored a lot of grudges and guilt, and she worried constantly. She felt the need to control everything in her life, yet she knew she couldn't. After attending a women's retreat, Nance realized what her negativity was doing to her.She released her worries, fears, anger, and resentments at the foot of the cross. Then she felt a renewal in her heart. She was happy and at peace.

When she was dying, Nance told me that the most difficult thing she'd ever had to do was forgive - both her ex-husband and herself -- for past mistakes. She said forgiving was even harder than dying!

Forgiveness isn't a simple one time event. It's a process that often takes time (sometimes years), but it's an important step to healing.

Jesus taught forgiveness when he said we'd be forgiven in the same way we forgive others, and when he told Peter we should forgive, not seven times, but seventy times seven. Of course, Jesus also lived forgiveness. While hanging on the cross, he looked at his torturers and said, "Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34)

10) Get Thankful.

When I'm depressed, I need to make a conscious effort to count my blessings. An attitude of hopelessness and discontent has a hard time competing with an attitude of gratitude. 1 Thessalonians 5:28 says, "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." It's important to remember that depression is not fatal and it doesn't last forever. You WILL survive! Remind yourself that this cloud of despair will pass eventually. It may seem like there's no light at the end of the tunnel, but trust that there is; and be thankful for that, as you wait for the light to appear.

So, while kisses from your husband (or a psychiatrist) may be great, they can't cure depression. But along with medication and the proper treatment, now you have some practical steps you can take for your own well being. There are times when one of these strategies may be more helpful than the rest. Other times, it may seem that none of them makes a huge difference. But I keep practicing all of them anyway, because I know they are steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Following them on a regular basis may not eliminate depression forever, but they help me to minimize their severity.

These tips can be helpful for people who are not depressed too. They can be useful for anyone who is a little discouraged, a little blue, or needs to refocus on more positive things in life.

I hope that by trying these ideas you may find yourself on the way to experiencing more joy.

Introduction

If you make the decision to breastfeed your baby, what steps should you take to ensure your baby receives the best nourishment? While many mothers are aware that avoiding alcohol whilst pregnant is advisable, it seems that the guidelines for post pregnancy are somewhat unclear.

After consulting with the experts we have complied some essential facts about drinking alcohol whilst breastfeeding.

The effect of alcohol

o    The level of alcohol in a mother's bloodstream is very similar to the levels in the breast milk.

o    Levels peak between 30 and 60 minutes of drinking alcohol, or 90 minutes if you drank with a meal.

o    It takes between two and three hours for a unit of alcohol (a small glass of wine, or half a pint of ordinary-strength beer) to leave a nursing mum's breast milk.

The effect on your baby

o    Breast milk containing alcohol is likely to disrupt your babies sleep patterns and cause the baby to become agitated.

o    Larger amounts of alcohol may cause a sedative effect.

o    Research shows that babies may take around 20% less milk if alcohol is present in breast milk. This is because alcohol inhibits the mother's 'let-down' which releases milk to the nipple.

o    Consequently, babies are likely to need feeding more often and may even go on 'nursing-strike' due to the altered taste of the milk.

In moderation

Dr Wendy Jones, a pharmacist who is a Registered Breastfeeding Supporter with the UK based Breastfeeding Network says it's safe for breastfeeding mothers to drink alcohol "within reason" - a position supported by La Leche League and the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs.

"An occasional glass of wine is fine but binge or regular drinking above the recommended daily levels of two to three alcohol units is harmful to mum and baby," says Wendy. "It is better not to drink every day but to keep alcohol for social occasions."

However if you do drink over the recommendations at a social occasion, you may want to avoid breastfeeding. Wendy advises, "If you feel drunk and particularly if you have drunk enough to vomit, it is better not to breastfeed for 12 hours".

Alcohol contained in breast milk will not remain there once the alcohol has passed from the mothers system. Therefore 'pumping and dumping' to expel the milk containing alcohol is not necessary.

Know your limits

According to breastfeeding consultant and former maternity nurse, Geraldine Miskin, first-time mums often choose to avoid alcohol altogether, however those with children tend to be more comfortable including alcohol in their diet.

"They have experience looking after small babies and children and know their boundaries," she says. "Managing family needs with a sore head will definitely not be part of their plan. However, if you have more than one child and a crazy day with no help - a glass of wine at the end of the day keeps you sane!"

Geraldine suggests that mothers who do want a drink should follow these guidelines;

o    Have alcohol with a meal and shortly after a feed, so there is time to process the alcohol before baby needs to feed again.

o    However, she advises having at least two alcohol-free days each week: "This way you won't become dependent on 'that one glass of wine' at the end of a long day, which can quickly become two or three".

Is abstinence best?

Many take a very different view on alcohol and breastfeeding. Janet Fyle, professional policy advisor at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), argues that drinking in moderation sends out the wrong signal to mothers.

"The RCM advises abstinence in pregnancy and during breastfeeding," says Janet. "In the light of all the evidence, we believe cumulative alcohol consumption can be harmful to mother and baby."

Janet argues that advising women it is OK to drink in moderation is very dangerous, as many ask the question, "What is moderation? If someone is consuming alcohol regularly, it's very easy for them to cross the line." Mothers raising children alone without support and those with post-natal depression could be particularly at risk.

Mothers nursing their babies in bed should be particularly careful. "If you are co-sleeping, you must never consume alcohol because of the danger of suffocation," says Janet. "The same applies to your partner."

While abstinence is the College's official recommendation, midwives are encouraged to consider the individuals circumstances when advising on drinking alcohol. Janet stresses, "We're not trying to tell people how to live their lives. If someone says 'I'm going off to a wedding, can I have a glass of champagne?', that's different."

Conclusion - What is best for baby?

The evidence suggests that for mothers who want to enjoy the odd drink, switching to bottle-feeding is not necessary and may deny your baby the benefits of breast milk.

"Breast milk from a mother, who has the occasional small glass of wine or half a pint of beer (the equivalent of one to two alcohol units) is still superior to formula milk, which does not contain all the immunological and other special properties we know breast milk has," says Wendy.

"If you know your boundaries with alcohol, there is no need to switch to formula," agrees Geraldine. "Just think of all the benefits your baby will be missing out on if you give up breastfeeding during the day - just so that you can have a glass of wine at night."

Everyone has feelings of sadness. In most cases, these occasions last for a few hours or days. Nearly one-fifth of the people in the world, however, are diagnosed with major depression, which causes depression that lasts for weeks, months, or longer. These moods result in problems performance in career, family, or interpersonal interactions, which can become severe.

Females who have signs of depression when they become pregnant may be treated for perinatal depression. This condition may develop any time after pregnancy begins, or any time thereafter, until the infant is one year old. Typically, however, those who develop this illness after the child is born are diagnosed with postpartum depression.

Perinatal depression or postpartum depression may be caused by a number of factors. These factors can be physiological. For example, women with a previous or family history of clinical depression or mental illness are more susceptible to developing perinatal depression or postpartum depression. Furthermore, alterations in hormone levels in postpartum mothers, such as decreases in estrogen and progesterone amounts, can cause this illness. Postpartum thyroid problems can cause signs of depression such as exhaustion, irritability, and hopelessness.

At times, mental depression is a result of emotional issues. Women may are fatigued and overwhelmed in learning to cope with the needs of the new infant. These issues are sometimes magnified by a lack of support from family, friends, or spouse. Money problems may also assist in causing postpartum depression.

Perinatal depression and postpartum depression often have grave consequences for both the woman and her new child. Worry and depression may prevent a woman from connecting fully with her baby or being capable of meeting her child's physiological and emotional requirements. This may worsen the mother's feelings of insignificance, guilt, and low self-worth.

The infant is also affected by the new mother's problems. Failure to bond with his or her mom may cause the baby to develop trust problems in emotional relationships throughout life. Further, infants who do not have their physiological or emotional requirements met typically do not grow and develop properly. This condition, called "failure to thrive," may be very serious or even fatal to the infant.

Perinatal depression or postpartum depression can damage everyone in the family. The spouse or significant other can feel ignored or unable to help the woman's depression symptoms. This can severely damage their partnership. Other children in the family may experience similar emotions, and develop school-related or peer problems as well.

Depression harms the whole family. Therefore, women who have perinatal depression or postpartum depression should seek depression treatment as quickly as possible. Numerous approaches can be used, such as talk therapy and medication treatments. Medicines, however, can be risky for nursing babies, and sometimes yield erratic outcomes due to the tremendous hormonal fluctuations a woman has during these hectic months. Furthermore, traditional counseling therapies can be lengthy and expensive.

Two therapies for dealing with depression that do not involve medicines and may quickly yield dramatically effective outcomes are hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP. Traditional Hypnotherapy is most effective for clients who can be easily hypnotized or are capable of accepting ideas without needing to analyze or comprehend them. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy is very useful for persons who often overanalyze. These techniques aid individuals to relax and get rid of tension.

For clients who are more critical or analytical individuals, NLP is often more effective. With NLP, trained practitioners give people depression help by coaching them to restructure their thought processes. This strategy can, quite literally, allow a client think past the depressive mood and conquer it.

Individuals can conquer depression by developing NLP techniques such as anchoring. They learn to remember times when they felt happy and controlled their situations. Remembering the event renews these emotions. Clients are instructed to put two fingers together and remember these feelings. The unconscious mind connects the touch of the two fingers with the emotions. Hence, the finger touch becomes an "anchor."

Then, when the individual begins to feel overwhelmed, he or she sparks the anchor by touching these identical two fingers together again. This brings back emotions of self-control and results in empowerment.

Through another strategy called the Flash, individuals learn to think away harmful feelings. They program their unconscious minds to instantly substitute positive thoughts for negative ones. When negative thoughts arise, the mind instantly exchanges them for positive thoughts. After learning this technique, individuals find it nearly impossible to conjure up negative thoughts!

Summary: Perinatal depression and postpartum depression may have harmful results for a woman and her new baby. The rest of their family is also profoundly affected because of these problems. Because of the probable severity of the consequences of this condition, females with depression should seek treatment as soon as symptoms begin. Two very effective strategies that do not require medication or great outlays of time and money are hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

About 1:110 births results in a child who has autism. There is no one cause that anyone can agree on. There are many theories. Some of them have been disproven, others warrant further study. There are some theories that autism has solely prenatal cause, some say that it is exclusively postnatal, and yet others are that it is a combination of things.

One of the most prevalent theories in the past, and one that has been disproven many times, is the theory of the refrigerator mother. This theory said that autism was linked to childhood trauma, through bad parenting, specifically bad mothering. The mother was supposed to have withheld her affection from the child, thus being like a refrigerator. This theory was advanced by Bruno Bettleheim, and was disproven after his death.

There are three theories that actually belong in the class. That is that autism is caused by environmental causes like vaccines, thiomersal or the MMR vaccine. Thiomersal was an additive to vaccines that was phased out in the US in the 1990s. The MMR vaccine is a frequently accused culprit, although many proponents of these theories blame vaccines all together. There are a number of reasons that these three things have gotten the blame. One is that autism really starts to become apparent around 18-24 months old. Between 12-24 months old children get several vaccinations. There is a correlation there, but correlation doesn't equal causation. Another reason that this theory exists is because a British scientist said that he had proof that the MMR vaccine and thiomersal caused autism. His theory had followers, but there was no clear consensus. It has recently come out that he lied about his data to "prove" his theory. Most autism researchers say there is no link between these things and autism, but there are some, especially parents, who hang on to this theory.

Since autism is primarily about the connections in the brain being made in different ways, or not at all, another theory gaining popularity is that it is caused by an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease attacks the body itself. In this theory the immune disease attacks the brain. The causes could be viral infection at birth, or shortly thereafter, that causes the immune system to go wild and start attacking the body. The results that have been coming from studies based around this subject don't agree with each other.

Some hypotheses haven't had any study, or no significant study, even though they have followers. One is that autism is caused by vitamin D deficiency. Another is that autism is caused by excessive hygiene. That means that the child's environment is so clean that there in no exposure to anything, and that leads to autism.

There is one theory to autism. The most commonly accepted theories all agree that the cause might push a child who is already disposed to having autism into having full blown autism. There is plenty of continuing research into the suggested causes of autism, as well as cures or better treatments for people who have autism.

Traditional Chinese Medicine first talks about pregnancy in the ancient book, the Nei Jing, back in the 1st or 2nd century BC, other famous texts since then also cover this topic.

INFERTILITY
The success rate in treating infertility is dramatic and it does so by bringing the patients body back to health. Many couples who go the route of IVF would have benefited greatly if they had first under gone Chinese Medicine treatment of herbs and acupuncture. One set of statistics put the number of women falling pregnant in this way above 80% and those who go on to IVF would have a better result and a healthier baby.

There are several trials that have been undertaken and practitioners who have specialized in this area. They often set out protocols that have worked for them such as different herbs at different times in the cycle and acupuncture at a set time to maximize ovulation etc.

I prefer to treat the person's constitutional weakness and leave protocols behind. Nearly always their will be a specific weakness preventing a successful pregnancy. In three recent cases I have concentrated on obstruction of the middle jiao i.e. - fullness across the region of the the diaphragm area preventing energy descending to the lower jiao i.e. - pelvic area. Unlike other therapies which seek to find specifics such as hormonal balance etc if you normalize qi and blood flows, then the body will make the corrections itself.

Herbs such as lu lu tong [liquid amber] can be used to unblock fallopian tubes. There are lists of herbs not to use in pregnancy to prevent possible miscarriage but in Chinese Medicine, if the herbs match the pattern then what is inappropriate for one will in fact prevent miscarriage in another. Having said that staying on the safe side is in order so cold descending herbs would normally be avoided such as da huang [rhubarb root]
I have not known any of my patients to have an epidural if they have had acupuncture during pregnancy.

MORNING SICKNESS
Both acupuncture and herbs work on morning sickness, once again different acupuncture treatments and different herbs will be used according to the individual's constitution.

BREECH POSITION & OVERDUE CASES
Acupuncture and moxibustion are very good to correct a breech presentation, any time after 34 weeks. It can also be used to induce birth when the baby is over due.

MISCARRIAGE
Rather than putting your feet up and hoping for the best, Chinese herbs can settle a restless foetus as can acupuncture but once again the reason for this happening must be diagnosed in Traditional Chinese Medical terms.

ECLAMPSIA AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Very good results can be achieved but these cases are best treated before we get to these symptoms which reflect a poor constitution going into the pregnancy.

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE OR HYPOTENSION
Both acupuncture and herbs can stimulate the system to normalise this symptom. It is usually the kidney and spleen energies that require tonifying.

DIABETES
Type two diabetes responds to Chinese medicine and in pregnancy is very much related to the kidney energy being insufficient.

POST NATAL DEPRESSION
In Chinese Medicine this is not a psychiatric problem but the result of the physical drain of child birth. In this situation the mother needed to build her constitution up before and during pregnancy and make sure help is at hand to prevent overly stressful situation in her life.

OVERDUE BABY
Chinese medicine uses both herbs and acupuncture to bring on a delayed birth.

MASTITIS
Herbs particularly make short work of mastitis problems.

POSTPARTUM
Postpartum problems respond very well to both herbs and acupuncture

LACTATION
Foods and herbs will increase milk supply and also reduce an over supply.

Stress and depression can make a woman, especially a woman suffering from substance abuse, feel overwhelmed and anxious. Many women find it difficult to cope with the stress and depression that can be brought on by daily life. Between juggling the needs of others and their own needs, it can be hard for a woman to take time out of her busy life to deal with her own emotions.

While some women find that activities like yoga, reading, painting or exercise help them cope with stress and depression, other women don't feel like they even have the time to carve out for those activities. Music can be an incredibly powerful tool for women who find it difficult to find 15, 30 minutes or an hour for themselves each day. Although we're still learning about how music impacts the body, we know that music therapy can be effective for treating stress and depression as well as anxiety or feelings of being overwhelmed.

Combating Daily Stress and Depression With Music
We've all listened to a song on the radio that has brightened our mood, made us feel more at peace or brought a smile to an otherwise terrible day. Some songs bring to mind memories of happier times, like our school days or a particular family vacation, while others put us in a more thoughtful mood. When you listen to music to relax, here are some things to keep in mind:

Don't use headphones! Play the music through speakers, even if you aren't in the car and let your whole body feel the rhythm. Dance if you want to dance, sing if you want to sing. Let your body tell you how the music can ease your anxiety, stress and depression.

Close your eyes. If you can, listen to the music at home or in a place where it is safe to close your eyes. This helps calm our brains and get our bodies to focus on the beat or the lyrics. If you are listening to soft music or jazz, take deep breaths while you are listening and focus your mind on the notes. If you are listening to something upbeat, have a 30 second dance marathon and get physically active.

Make a mix tape. Ok, so we don't make cassette tapes anymore, but take that concept and put together a playlist of songs that will help you cope with your feelings of anxiety, stress and depression. If a certain song reminds you of a past relationship that is the root of your depression, avoid adding it to your play list, or if you must add it to the beginning of your play list and make the subsequent tracks more relaxing and uplifting. If you need to cry, cry it out and let the next song heal your heart.

The community mental heath team are there to help those who are suffering from mental health problems. The first port of call for anyone who thinks that they are suffering from some kind of mental health problem is your doctor who will be able to recommend the right sort of help.

The community mental health team consists of a number of professionals who are trained in their specific areas and can include psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and of course the community psychiatric nurse or CPN. Some specific problems or issues that can arise in addition to existing mental health problems or which can exacerbate or trigger mental health problems and which might need extra consideration include:

o Financial problems

o Physical disabilities

o Housing issues

o Divorce or relationship problems

o Childcare issues

Certain kinds of mental health problems may result in different needs and may therefore require some specialist help to deal with and these can include:

o Elderly depression and dementia

o Child or Teen depression

o Postnatal depression

o Bipolar disorder

o Schizophrenia

Obviously, finding one person fully qualified and skilled in all of these areas just isn't possible so the community mental health team work together in order to ensure that the best advice and support is available as many of the professionals involved will be trained in specialist areas that allow them to offer a better service to people suffering from specific problems. So who is likely to be involved in the community mental health team?

Psychiatrist

Patients can be referred to a psychiatrist by their doctor. After an initial assessment, the psychiatrist will recommend a suitable course of treatment and medication. If a mental health problem is particularly severe then they are also able to recommend that the individual be detained in hospital for a period of time. However, this is a last resort and also requires the approval of another doctor and a social worker who all agree that this is the best option for an individual concerned either for the individual's safety or for the safety of others.

Psychologist

Psychologists have an understanding of human behaviour, emotions and how the mind works and although they cannot prescribe medication they can offer various types of psychological therapies. Patients can be referred to them by the doctor or other members of the community health team.

The Key Worker

People suffering from mental health problems will usually be assigned a key worker, which can be anyone in the community mental health team. The key worker ensures that the individual gets the right kind of help that they need. They will regularly assess the progress of an individual and report back to the rest of the team.

Community Psychiatric Nurse or CPN

The key worker will often be a CPN who will usually make regular visits to people with mental health problems in their own homes. They offer an important lifeline for people who are feeling isolated and alone with their mental health problems or who are experiencing particular difficulties. They are aware of the many issues surrounding mental health and can listen as well as help people talk through their problems in a setting in which they feel comfortable.

The CPN will liaise with and work closely with other members of the team to make sure that any practical support and assistance is offered when needed. They monitor medication, make sure the individual knows how to take their medication and they also look out for additional symptoms or side effects of that medication. The family and loved ones of a person suffering from mental health problems often need additional support in order to understand mental illness and to be able to cope with it, the CPN can offer practical advice and guidance.

Occupational Therapists

Occupational therapists help individuals to cope with practical issues on a day to day basis in areas such as dressing, toileting and feeding themselves and can help individuals regain some control of their lives.

Social workers

Social workers can ensure that an individual gets access to various social services that will improve their quality of life and that they may be entitled to such as home help, respite care and perhaps admission to day or residential centres. They can also offer assistance in dealing with housing needs, financial difficulties or other social problems.

The best care

Many other people can be involved in the community mental health team including various support workers, therapists, counsellors, and of course loved ones. Together they all make sure that the individual suffering from mental illness gets the best care possible. Each team member can make a valuable contribution to the individual's quality of life and can help them not only to cope with their illness on a day to day basis but to regain control over their lives and integrate with the rest of the community in a positive and productive way.
