Geographic tongue is a condition that is marked by irregular red patches on the surface of the organ and may sometimes vary in shade or appearance. It is a benign disorder that affects people all over the world. However, studies of this oral anomaly have shown that women are impacted by it to a much greater degree than men. In fact, over half the cases that are diagnosed in America each year occur in women. While this might be a clue to discovering the real underlying causes behind it, the question of why women are more prone to it remains. Many physicians believe that a woman's hormones play a huge part in the development of geographic tongue, and the recurrence of symptoms are in direct relation to hormonal surges that a woman experiences at different times of her life. Women who have already been diagnosed with this complaint are very likely to have a return of symptoms during a pregnancy or during the bodily changes that occur later in life when they are no longer able to have children.

Doctors have linked female hormones to geographic tongue because of the instances of it in both pregnant and menopausal women. The onset of puberty does not seem to be a factor, however, and most female children who have been diagnosed with it are infants or toddlers. That is what makes this condition so puzzling; if hormones are to blame for it, why does it not present with every hormonal condition? While more cases have been reported in pregnancy, where bodily changes are significant, there seems to be little link between geographic tongue and the menstrual cycle. It is not completely absent during this time, but fewer cases have been reported.

This may suggest that certain pregnancy hormones may trigger it, a case made even stronger when the condition often vanishes postpartum. If pregnancy hormones are a large contributor to geographic tongue, they are certainly not the only cause, however. Women who are entering the end of their child-bearing years have also reported moderate to severe cases as well, both new and returning. While the hormones triggered by both pregnancy and the change of life in women are different, the link between the two is the body's ability to reproduce. Women who believe they might have it or who are experiencing a spike in symptoms should consult their physician for a diagnosis and advice on how to manage them.

Have you ever harnessed the exhilarating ride that is the power of expectation? Did you know it is one of the world's truly magical rides? Why it can transform not only your days, but your relationships too.

If you do something expecting it to go well... guess what? There's a pretty good chance it will.

If you do something expecting it to go badly or to be nasty. Guess what? It probably will.

The power of expectation is an amazing transformational force and can very easily become your greatest self fulfilling prophecy.

Keeping in mind that you cannot (and probably should not) control the behaviour of others, how can you use the power of expectations to turn a relationship around?

It's absurd, but here's how it worked for a client of mine.

Her husband works for himself. They had two small children under two. She worked from home as an author and was the primary carer for the children. She was finding the time between 5pm and 7pm every day to be very challenging. Everything needed to be done and everyone was tired. She expected her husband to be home by 6pm every day so he could help her during this challenging time to bathe and feed children and prepare the evening meal.

He rarely made it home before 6.30pm and this was causing her intense irritation. Each time he was 'late' she would spend the minutes after 6pm berating him and feeling like an unloved victim of her circumstances. We discussed how pitifully unhappy she was making herself with her expectation and continual disappointment when it wasn't met.

The solution we agreed upon... don't laugh!

What she resolved to do was stunningly simple and effective... she told herself to expect her husband home by 7pm every night. Guess what??

He was always early! What a man! How lucky and loved she felt. (And what strange tricks our brains can play on us).

Another client with small children used the same trick with the power of expectations to feel happier with herself. She was a high achieving, ambitious business woman in her 30s when she had children. Every milestone she set herself in her career had been achieved easily and effortlessly.

Then her children arrived. Instead signing off on business deals, there were days when she:

  • Got the dirty clothes in the washing machine (yay), but never made it to the dryer

  • Could feed everybody (yay), but forget to change out of her pyjamas

  • Breastfed the baby (yay), but forgot to tuck everything away before opening the door to the door to door salesman

  • Clear the dishes off the table (yay), but put them in the pantry instead of the dishwasher

It was at the end of one of those days that she rang me for help. She broke down in tears and sobbed out the huge list of things she hadn't achieved that day... the floor was dirty, the beds weren't made, the children were going to have tinned food because she hadn't got around to cooking the organic vegetables yet...

I quietly said, 'Stop. Do you have two children who are alive, happy and healthy?'

'Yes', she sobbed.

'Well, isn't that the most magnificent thing you could achieve in a day? Haven't you done well? Does the rest really matter?'

With those few simple questions her life was changed. She harnessed the power of expectation, changed it and began to find joy, laughter, love and moments of sheer bliss in every day. What a difference a change in expectation made to her attitude, her happiness and her life.

By simply changing your expectations, you can change how you feel about your day, your relationship and yourself. This must surely be one of the simplest and easiest personal growth tools ever... and it certainly provides amazing results.

The first few weeks after delivery can be very new and scary for newborn babies, and of course, their proud parents. Special care needs to be given both to the mother and baby to ensure that they recover properly from the delivery experience. Swaddling and Kangaroo Mother Care are two different mothering practice choices commonly used and discussed among mothers and infant care experts. So, what are the differences between both choices and which should you practice?

Swaddling

Swaddling is a technique used to care for newborns by wrapping the baby snugly and tightly in cotton muslin cloth or blankets. While it may provide warmth and artificial comfort for the baby, enabling the baby to sleep for longer periods of time, it has multiple risks. The risks involved in swaddling are:

  • Overheating of the baby when wrapped in multiple layers of cloth.

  • Hip dysplasia can occur during infant development.

  • Pressure on the lungs created by tight swaddling poses the risk of lung infection.

However, if your baby feels distressed due to the free movements of his arms and legs, swaddling is a good way to provide a cosy atmosphere and calm the baby down.

Kangaroo Mother Care

Kangaroo Mother Care or KMC is a mothering practice choice practiced worldwide today to provide natural healthcare to mothers and newborns. It is complementary to high tech neonataology, and is used to stabilize premature or underweight infants. Exclusive breastfeeding (instead of milk formulas) and skin to skin contact with the mother as a natural incubator are all incredibly simple and natural practices encouraged by KMC. KMC is effective because inherent in nature's design is the best system of physical and emotional healing that a mom can provide to her infant.

Breast milk is the best nutritional food you can ever provide for your baby. It contains important nutrients and immunization properties which helps strengthen the baby's immune system. Breastfeeding also allows the baby to develop a strong bond with you as a mom, while stabilizing your moods and increasing your rate of recovery from the delivery process. The multiple benefits of breastfeeding make it one of the most important post delivery practices for mothers and infants who lack other health support services. It is nature's best way of protecting both the mother and the infant. Accompanied by skin to skin contact between mother and baby, these two basic practices provide a conducive environment for newborns to develop when they are in an extremely vulnerable state.

The only reason some moms choose not to give KMC to their babies is due to a lack of time. Breastfeeding can be physically exhausting especially for modern mums with many other responsibilities and concerns. However, the benefits of KMC and exclusive breastfeeding make these mothering practices worthwhile choices which are highly rewarding for both mom and baby. It is the best thing you can do for your newborn child.

The hair loss industry is a growing business that has reached over billions of dollars a year in revenue. With that said, we can find so many products that all promises to do one thing. However, majority of all hair loss products do not really make the cut to deliver the results they were selling in their advertisements. And sadly the one that proved the least effective is the hair loss shampoo.

Excessive hair loss is truly one of the worst nightmares that any person could have. It is important that everyone knows about ways to prevent it. As many say, an ounce of prevention is much greater in value than a pound of cure.

You should start adopting and practicing ways to prevent hair loss immediately even if there is no imminent problem. There are many ways on how you could prevent this from becoming a serious problem that could bog you.

Hair loss is inevitable and is a natural process that happens. On the average, people from all ages lose about a hundred strands each day. Such hair lost is totally and abruptly replaced. In many cases, new hair starts to grow even if the strands to be replaced are not yet falling off. There is nothing you could do to prevent this natural process.

However, there are certain guidelines that you should practice if you are aiming to prevent excessive loss. This is not natural and is usually caused by the tedious and damaging practices and products you apply to your hair.

Tips to prevent excessive hair loss

Here are some tips that could help you prevent excessive or unnatural hair loss. Take note that there are several practices that you might have thought off as proper hair care but in truth, are contributory to the problem.

1) Consult a dermatologist or a hair expert before deciding to use new hair styling and caring products that are released in the market. To prevent hair loss due to such products, make sure you properly read directions for use of such products and seek feedbacks and product reviews. Also ask experts about possible adverse effects of these products to prevent hair loss.

2) Watching your diet not only gives you proper weight management and nutrition replenishment benefits. It is found that eating foods rich in calcium, iron, vitamins and minerals would contribute enough in giving hair nutrition and thus help prevent excessive hair loss.

3) To prevent hair loss, try to avoid alternate styling that involve putting tension on the hair and scalp, like braids and ponytails.

4) Handle your hair properly especially when it is wet. It has been found that when wet, it is more fragile and vulnerable to falling off. To prevent hair loss after a bath, do not rub the hair briskly with a towel. Instead, blot the hair dry. This is a good and practical way to prevent hair loss.

5) Brushing the hair can be a contribution factor as well especially when you comb roughly with commonly used fine-toothed combs. Doing so would apply excessive pressure to the hair, making it more vulnerable to loss. So always brush your hair gently using wide-toothed combs and smooth-tipped hair brushes.

Overall, the best guideline to hair loss prevention would be to live a stress-free lifestyle. It seems impossible but learning to control and curtail stress would really help prevent hair loss because the hair, just like any other parts of the body is affected when blood and nutrition circulation is not optimal.

I have a few blogs that support couples in choosing their baby's sex.  Most times, people find me because they are thinking about or trying to get pregnant and they know, without a doubt, that they want one to have one gender over another.  The reasons for this vary.  Sometimes, they may already have a boy and want a girl. Perhaps they want a son to carry on the family name.  Maybe one gender runs in their family and they want to change this trend.  Whatever the reason, there are universal tips that will help you chose your baby's sex.  This article will discuss them, and will tell you why, and how, they work.

What Determines Your Baby's Sex: There are a lot of old wives tales that explain why couples have one gender over another.  Whether you believe these or not, the bottom line is, if a sperm with female chromosomes (X) reaches and fertilizes your egg first, you'll have a daughter. If a boy containing sperm fertilizes the egg, you'll have a son.

The chances are pretty equal (about 50 / 50) for each baby gender if you do nothing to change this. That doesn't mean, however, that you don't have any control over which one ultimately wins the race.  There are quite a few things that you can do to influence this.  You can control your timing, your diet, your acidity, and the way that that you send the sperm to the egg.  I'll discuss all of these things in more detail below.

Controlling Conception Timing To Chose Your Baby's Gender:  As stated before, the sperm chromosomes are extremely important, but you should also understand that the X and Y sperm behave very differently.  The girl chromosomes are very strong and will live much longer, but the boy sperm are much faster.  Choosing your baby's sex then requires you to take advantage of these things.

There is a "fertility window" in your cycle, which are the days that give you your best chance of getting pregnant.  If you want a girl, you should shoot for the beginning of this window, which is about three days (or as many as 4) before you ovulate. If you want a boy, shoot for the end of the window, which is the day of, or one day after, ovulation.

Speaking more of old wives tales, there are many ways you're told to gauge or predict,  your ovulation (basal temperature, rhythm method, cervical mucus), but modern technology works much better and is much more accurate.  Ovulation predictors, in my experience, work much better. Using cervical mucus, I thought I wasn't ovulating and was having trouble getting pregnant.  Once I started using a saliva ovulation predictor, I was happily pregnant within two months - because I could literally see when I was getting ready to ovulate.

Sending The Sperm To The Egg: Sexual Positioning And Gender Selection: Remembering that the girl sperm can live for several days, if you're trying to conceive a baby girl, you should use sexual or intercourse positions that are shallow, because this places the sperm far away from where it needs to go.  This makes it more difficult for boy sperm.  If you want to conceive a baby boy, use deeper penetration, as you need to give the Y chromosomes the shortest, fastest trip possible for a son.

Getting The Right Acidity To Get The Gender You Want:  Remembering that the boy sperm are weak, you'll need likely need to lower or alkaline your vaginal PH if you want a son.  Boy sperm just can not survive an environment that is too acidic.  But, if you want a girl, you'll want to raise or exploit your acidity.  This is where many people give up, and it frustrates me. This process is not as hard as you think. Get a PH tester at a health food store or online.  This will tell you where you are starting.  Then, you can change your diet or douche appropriately until you are in the correct range.

The biggest mistake that I see people making is just using just one technique.  Maybe they're really good about timing their conception only to leave everything else to chance.  Or, maybe they use the correct sexual position on the wrong day.  Or, maybe they just bypass their acidity all together.  To really be sure that you'll get the gender you want, you need to address all of these.  And, with a little patience and the right tools, this doesn't have to be as difficult as you think, even if one gender ones in your family. It's said that if you correctly address all of the variables, you can raise your odds to well over 90%, which in my experience is very much worth the effort.

Never underestimate the impact proper posture can have when it comes to lessening your back pain often related to pregnancy. Whether at your home relaxing or at your desk in the office, make an effort to sit straight, not to slump and to take the time to stretch should you feel stiffness setting in. Taking these steps will help keep back pain under control as well as help you maintain alertness during the day, even if you are affected by fatigue.

Selecting appropriate clothes and shoes during your nine months of being pregnant can easily make a significant difference in whether or not you will begin to experience back pain. Though they may certainly flatter the legs, high-heeled shoes will not be the best choice in fact a definite NO NO when it comes to staving off back pain. During pregnancy, your center of gravity shifts, making it more difficult to walk correctly in heels. Therefore, choose low-heeled, sensible shoes that provide moderate support and do not increase the back strain you may already be feeling. You may also want to steer clear of tight or form-fitting clothing that will impact the way you stand or sit. Comfort rules while you are pregnant, a well known fact which even the most fashion-forward moms-to-be must accept.

The way in which you sleep when pregnant can also have a tremendous effect on whether or not you will end up suffering from back pain. Sound slumber may not be easy to come by while you are expecting, and it may be quite difficult to find a comfortable position through the night. Consider sleeping mainly on your side, and possibly tucking a pillow or two between your knees. This will help keep you in good alignment and will help you avoid stiffness and pain in the morning.

Massage can certainly be a wonderfully effective method of alleviating the back pain of pregnancy. In fact, many massage practitioners offer specialized prenatal services that will help relax the tightness and stiffness pregnant women often develop. Massage chairs and heated pads can be used at home for consistent, targeted therapy.

Finally, never underestimate the value of some good stretching and physical movement can have with regards to lessening the degree of back pain, even during pregnancy. Staying flexible as well as in good health is very important at every time of life, but particularly so during pregnancy when the body undergoes a tremendous amount of changes. Do several stretches and light calisthenics (gymnastic exercises) each day and you will soon notice that your back pain you may have been experiencing has started to fade away. Now you are able to turn your attention to more important things such as decorating the nursery and shopping for baby essentials.

Although the discomfort you are feeling may last only until your new bundle of joy arrives, that isn't to say you have to suffer throughout your pregnancy. By applying the guidance found above, you'll be able to rid yourself of back pain and focus on the thrilling excitement and anticipation you feel while awaiting your family's latest addition.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects 3 to 5 percent of children worldwide. Pertinent studies reveal that its symptoms of inattentiveness, lack of focus and hyperactivity are most likely carried by sufferers up until adulthood. As per clinical definition, ADHD is regarded as a neurobehavioral developmental disorder that limits the child's ability to routinely perform school tasks or adapt easily in social circles. If ADHD is carried into adulthood, the aspect of self-actualization will prove to be a struggle.

The risks of unresolved ADHD lies in the likelihood of its symptoms to impair learning abilities, hinder work performance, affect relationships and even lead to emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression. No medical cure has yet been formulated to completely inhibit the manifest of this disorder or resolve underlying neurological triggers; though stimulant drugs have been prescribed on sufferers for many years to subdue the symptoms.

Studies point out to genetics as a probable cause for ADHD, where a delay in brain development has been observed on kids showing symptoms of the disorder. Other scientific studies conducted on the subject of delayed brain development associates the disorder with environmental toxins that caused brain injury during the prenatal or postnatal stages of pregnancy. Toxins contain impurities that reduce blood circulation to the brain to thus affect the supply of oxygen required for efficient concentration and for the performance of mental tasks as well.

Medications have been manufactured to artificially increase blood flow to the brain and likewise stimulate neurotransmitter activity, but the downside to prescription stimulant use involves the reported 'spacing-out' in kids that occur over longer periods of time. In many instances, ADHD sufferers do not find long term relief for hyperactivity and its sedating properties may have been too much for the fragile brain chemistry of children.

Herbalists recommend the use of herbal remedies such as Hyoscyamus and related research confirms its potential as a safe alternative to psycho-stimulants. It is a natural therapeutic agent that helps limit the manifest of ADHD symptoms such as restlessness and disruptive behavior. Its active constituent-an alkaloid called hyoscyamine, stabilizes acetylcholine output in the brain, which eases over excitability. Hyoscyamus also contains hyoscine-an anti-cholinergic like hyoscyamine and a plant metabolite that purportedly enhances memory functions. Synergistically-hyoscyamine, hyoscine and their salts naturally occurring with the herb promote neurological debility that is regarded as a safer option to the anti-cholinergic drugs prescribed for ADHD.

Other notable medicinal substances used for ADHD symptoms like the Verta Alb., Arsen Iod, and Tuberculinum produce similar therapeutic effects to that of the Hyoscyamus. When the compounds of mentioned substances are combined in a therapeutic dosage, the formula will work to calm an erratic nervous system - thus lessening emotional outbursts while retaining cognitive stability. Find this potent formula in herbal supplements for ADHD such as BrightSpark which induces positive concentration, focus and all the more normalize the moody outbursts of frenetic kids. Herbal remedies such as this guarantee young ADHD sufferers a safe and effective solution to all the jittery encounters that comes with ADHD.

Back pain is a common occurrence during pregnancy. The weight gain, shift in your center of gravity and loosening of your ligaments caused by hormones all contribute to pain throughout the lower back and pelvis. Some women may find that their pain is caused by a bulging or herniated disc.

Disc problems are common. Many people over the age of twenty would show some signs of disc degeneration if they received spinal imaging tests, and nearly everyone in the elderly population has degenerated discs. With its commonness, it may seem that almost everyone should be suffering from chronic pain, but degenerated discs usually aren't symptomatic. They can occur or become symptomatic during pregnancy due to the extra pressure exerted on the lower back by a growing baby.

Disc Anatomy

Spinal discs sit between vertebrae and absorb shock. They are composed of a tough exterior and a gel-filled center, a construction that allows them to have a cushioning effect. Through age, spinal misalignment, uneven forces from poor posture, improper body mechanics or injury, the exterior of a disc can degrade. The fluid inside can be pushed to the weakest side of the disc, causing a bulging disc. If the exterior of the disc cracks and internal fluids leak out, the disc is herniated.

If the bulge or the leaking fluid don't cause changes in spinal mechanics or interfere with nerves, then the disc degeneration will be asymptomatic. With the addition of a growing baby, the bulge or herniation can increase and cause symptoms to arise.

The most common symptom of a herniated disc is nerve pain. In the lower back, sciatica can occur when the sciatic nerve, running from the lumbar spine to the foot on each side of the body, becomes impinged or irritated by disc material. Sciatica causes pain to radiate from the lower back down the buttock and into the leg. The pain is sharp and generally shoots down the nerve path.

Treatments

Pregnant women can still use some conventional pain treatment methods like heat and certain medications, but it is important to find something that addresses the problem directly.

Poor posture can exacerbate pressure on a damaged disc. Taking prenatal Pilates classes can help you maintain alignment and strengthen muscles around the spine that help support discs.

Chiropractic care may help alleviate pain from a herniated disc if it is caused by an alignment issue. By aligning the spinal and sacroiliac joints, a chiropractor can relieve pressure off discs and the sciatic nerve.

Acupuncture and acupressure are two types of pain management that are generally safe during pregnancy. Both interfere with pain sensations, acupuncture with the use of tiny needles and acupressure with applied pressure to specific points of the body. These therapies may work by targeting nerve clusters, releasing endorphins and/or unblocking energy meridians throughout the body (this latter explanation is the one supported by thousands of years of traditional Chinese medical practice). When seeking out a practitioner, be sure to find one well-versed in working with pregnant women. There are some pressure points believed to induce labor, which should be avoided unless that is the goal. Also, practitioners should be careful to avoid triggering muscle spasms, since the uterus is a muscle.

After delivery, the pain from your disc may subside since there will be less pressure on the lower back. It is still a good idea to pursue core strengthening exercises to provide support to the healing disc. If herniated disc pain continues well after labor, consider seeking inversion treatments that aim to expand interdiscal space and rehydrate damaged discs.

A herniated disc during pregnancy can cause lower back, buttock and leg pain. There are a number of options for safely managing pain while pregnant.
