If you look in the mirror and the image you see does not completely satisfy you, and after further and carefully analyzing your body you feel that in general terms you're pretty nice, there is always some details in your figure that does not "fit"; then it is time to solve it by using a girdle.

The market offers a variety of girdles and body control clothing designed with different materials, colors and innovative functionalities. This variety comes at a price, but responds to the shaping and styling needs that have been analyzed and classified in women and men.

The Colombian brand Co'Coon, leader in the world and well-known by its research and development of girdles, model and control clothing, using the latest technology, gives you some recommendations to buy correctly and to get your girdle with surprising results.

There are two basic variables to consider when buying a girdle:
1. The material
2. The area of the body to be corrected

1. The Material: Check the label to see the material with which they are made, because each shaper has different characteristics of elongation and compression.

- Comfort above all: If this is the first time you are using a girdle, it is recommended to start with one of the medium compression Seamless line, elaborated with a unique blend of Lycra and nylon microfiber, for maximum softness and comfort.

- Define the abdomen: If you need to remove localized fat in the abdomen we recommend you to use a shaper with thermal benefits, one that has latex band in the abdominal area, and internally lined with cotton to absorb excess sweating. This benefit can be obtained in four different lines: Light, Thermoslim Seamless, Powertech and the Extreme.

- Strong control with maximum comfort: If you want a high compression garment but you want it soft to the touch and easy to use, then you really need to wear a girdle from the Powertech line. This line provides an exclusive mesh fabric in addition to the Rubberflex's latex action that provides high shaping with reasonable compression.

- Maximum Control: If you like to feel the pressure of a strong control that outlines and reduces 1 to 3 sizes instantly, usually, then your best alternative are the shapers made with powernet. This strong short elongation mesh fabric allows the skin to breathe, making it ideal for post surgical occasions. These shapers also have long lasting qualities with posture correction functionalities. You can find them in the Powernet, Power-Med and Extreme lines.

- Comfortable with skin benefits: If you are always looking for products with extra benefits, then the Skin Care Line is the best option. These girdles outline and refine your figure with comfort and softness, plus the fabric is impregnated with nano-capsules like Seaweed, Vitamin E, Oatmeal and Milk and Caffeine to provide skin benefits such as hydration, toning, nutrition, elasticity and localized fat reduction. Co'Coon also has the capsules in spray form in order to recharge the shapers, and continue these benefits for as long as you own and wear the shaper.

- No More Cellulite: Cellulite reduction without strenuous exercises and traditional diet is now possible using girdles and control clothes with the bio-crystal technology. A great advantage is that bio-crystals, or crystallized minerals, are attached to the garment, and are ever present, providing benefits for the entire life of the girdle. And the best is that they work!

Due each woman's contour and shapes variations of their bodies, not to forget the specific effect desired, Co'Coon designs various alternatives of shapers as described herein. In all, girdles can be classified by three types of intensities: low control to those who only need to enhance their figure, half control to reduce flaccidity and high control to slim down inches off their bodies considerably.

2. The area of the body to be corrected: By knowing the desired level of compression, the next step is deciding on the right shaper design. Generally, women should target the body area(s) they do not like and want to conceal, contour or reduce as they look themselves in a mirror. With this in mind Co'Coon recommends:

- To give a better shape to the torso, one should use girdles with mid/high coverage in the back, they may or may not cover the chest but they must compress the waist and abdomen. The body girdles or the traditional ones are the best to use. They are usually designed as an under bust girdle shirt and come with or without any straps (strapless). Some are designed as high panties and corset type belts. The biggest advantage is the bodies. They are for external use and depending on the design they work either as blouse or top. Bodies are easy to combine with your current wardrobe to portray a complete fashionable outfit.

- For the lower part of the body the shapers are designed as panties, shorts, capris and pants to trim the waist, compress the stomach, reduce the size of the hips, shape the thighs and refine the general shape of the legs.

- If you need to reshape the contours of your body you can use a full body girdle (long or short), which reduce the size of the waist, while slimming down the abdomen, lower and middle back, hips and legs. Such girdles usually have a high level of compression, and their use is recommended after a surgery or postpartum. They include butt lift benefits and just by wearing them one can reduce one to three sizes.

- To refine the silhouette comfortably girdle dresses are a great option, they are available in both presentations: strapless and with strips, they raise the chest, shape the thigh, medium and low abdomen, reduces the size of the waist, back and side, while naturally enhancing the hips.

Besides the benefits already mentioned, today's' body shapers have also the quality to correct the posture, providing an elegant optical appearance, while portraying an attractive and captive youthful glance. With the proper dress and shoes you can even look higher. For permanent benefits we recommended the daily use of these garments.

The nutrients consumed in a healthy diet for pregnant woman serve mother and child in different ways. Of course, these nutrients continue to perform all the duties required of them prior to pregnancy. During pregnancy, however, more demands are placed on the essential nutrients as part of a healthy diet for pregnancy and baby's growth.

Only the best pregnancy diet will be able to provide all the extra nutrients needed for normal body function as well as normal fetal development and other pregnancy-specific functions.

Vitamin A: Vital for Healthy Pregnancy

Vitamin A is a vital, but often unappreciated, element of a healthy diet for pregnancy. It attributes greatly to eye health. Want those baby's baby blues to see clearly? Get your Vitamin A.

Vitamin A also helps to speed healing after baby is born. Some women also find Vitamin A in adequate amounts during the first trimester tames the symptoms of morning sickness.

Folic Acid: The Essential Nutrient for Pregnancy

In recent years, folic acid has enjoyed the spotlight. It has been promoted as an essential nutrient in the diet for pregnant woman. Folic acid helps mom's body manufacture red blood cells, an essential part of healthy pregnancy. It also supports the body in other metabolic processes.

Folic acid deficiencies post high stakes risk for baby as well. A deficiency in folic acid has been connected to brain and spinal birth defects. Getting enough of this B vitamin early in pregnancy can prevent these serious abnormalities.

How Vitamin C Benefits the Gestational Period

This citrus vitamin helps to support the mother's immune system protecting her and her unborn child from illness during those critical nine months. Vitamin C also helps to speed healing and increases elasticity. Both of these properties are of benefit to mom during pregnancy, labor and postpartum.

Without Vitamin C the growing baby is not as able to create collagen. Ligaments, tendons, cartilage and skin all use Vitamin C's ability to manufacture collagen for proper growth.

These essential nutrients are only part of the many vitamins and minerals that comprise a healthy diet for pregnancy. If you are left wondering, "What should I eat during pregnancy to get all the nutrients needed?" you are not alone. Prenatal vitamins are only the start.

To answer the question, "What should I eat during pregnancy?" mothers-to-be need to examine every part of diet and nutrition. Select only those elements that comprise the best pregnancy diet options. The foods most beneficial to a healthy diet for pregnancy are generally fresh, minimally processed (if they are processed at all) and free from chemical additives.

Congratulations! Your new baby has arrived, but now you may be anxious to rid yourself of your baby "pooch." First and foremost, remember to be good to yourself. After all, your body nourished your new baby for nine months and it's perfectly reasonable to expect it may take a month or so for your body to recuperate.

However, as anxious as you may be, starting a new exercise routine or diet may not be the best thing for you right now, but there may be some light exercises that you can do. Of course, the first thing you'll want to do is check with your doctor and make sure your body is ready.

Something to Consider

For women who are breast feeding, doing some light to moderate exercise is fine, but this is not the time to start losing weight quickly. Losing too much weight can release toxins into your breast milk and since your baby is getting all of his/her nutrients from your breast milk, anything you consume is, of course, being absorbed by your baby's body. And, if you begin to diet while breastfeeding, you may also deprive your baby of vital nutrients, plus your milk production may diminish.

Exercise Ideas for the New Mom

Many women worry about losing their baby belly, as if it can't happen fast enough. But it's important to note that you can't just lose your belly; there is no such thing as spot reduction. Reducing your stomach can only come with overall exercise and a healthy diet. A combination of aerobic and core exercises, plus resistance training, are all required. As previously noted, it's important to get the OK from your doctor before beginning any exercise routine after you give birth. Women who had a c-section normally need to wait longer to begin than women who did not. However, for most women who had no complications during birth, there are some light exercises you can try.

A. Aerobics

Walking is the easiest exercise most anybody can do, including new moms. Fifteen to twenty minutes, three times each week is typically tolerated by most new moms. Keep in mind, it may still be uncomfortable and it may take awhile to get back to your pre-baby routine, so go slowly. Add additional time, or another day, to your walking routine when you're feeling stronger. When you feel you'd like to step it up, take your baby for the walk in her stroller, and after that, try walking up a few hills. Another easy and comfortable way to get your aerobic workout is swimming.

B. Core Workout

Obviously, carrying a baby for nine months can weaken your abdominals. However, jumping into an abs class is not your best choice. Again, you need to start slowly, and check with your doctor first, but a couple of easy core exercises include pelvic tilts, the modified plank, or performing crunches with an exercise ball. Starting out, you want to try ten to fifteen reps each, two or three times per week.

C. Resistance Training

Resistance, or core, training is important in your goal of losing your baby belly because it helps increase your energy which we all need with a new baby. Plus, it raises your metabolic rate to help you lose weight.

Good core strengthening exercises work different muscle groups at the same time which helps strengthen and tone your entire body. If you haven't used an exercise ball, it's a great tool to accomplish this. But, in lieu of one, you can also try modified push ups, back extensions, squats or assisted lunges.

Of course, it's important to listen to your body as an indicator of what you need. If you're feeling good, trying increasing it a little; if you're feeling fatigued, take it easy or take a day off. We all know how much energy it takes to keep up with a new baby and getting some exercise is an important part of not only taking care of yourself, but having the energy to enjoy that new baby.

You expect that you will be struggling to take care of yourself and the other members of your family during confinement, so how are you going to fit in caring for a small baby as well? It is quite normal to feel overwhelmed and scared as you go into this period of your life. You may wonder how you will ever care for this tiny creature once it arrives in your world, but in the end the answers will come and everything will get done.

Baby First

The first rule of thumb during confinement is that the baby's needs have to come first. If you are choosing between taking a much needed nap and feeding the baby who wants nourishment every couple hours, you have to stay awake and make sure the baby is fed. This may not be the comfortable thing to do, but it is something that every new mother has to contend with.

Your needs come second the moment your baby is born. They cannot look after their own needs and survive on their own, so they have to depend on you to do everything for them. If you don't take care of them, who will?

The best thing to do is hire a confinement nanny who can take care of many of the baby's needs while you take that much needed nap or just get a shower. You will of course still do a lot to care for the baby yourself, but you need someone there to help you out so your personal needs are taken care of as well.

Bonding Time

There are some things that you really want to take advantage of while you are in the confinement period and bonding with your new baby is at the top of the list. Them more you bond with the baby during the first couple months of their life the stronger your connection will be to them throughout their lifetime.

Take advantage of having the extra help of a confinement nanny and really spend quality time bonding with your baby. This happens as you watch them sleep in your arms or sit up with them for a midnight feeding.

Talk to the baby. Sing to them. Tell them how much you love them. Look into their eyes and allow them to grip your finger for security. Just let them know you are there for them. They may be small and unable to communicate intelligibly, but science has proven that they feel and need the love.

On Baby Time

Finally, it is important to forget about the clock that most people go by throughout their life and learn to live on baby time while in confinement. It really doesn't matter what time of day it is if your baby needs fed or has a dirty diaper. Babies are in their own little world and don't know how everyone else functions. That is how you need to be as well.

It is important to do things when you have the chance, rather than when you would routinely do them before having the baby. This means sleeping when the baby sleeps even it if is two in the afternoon and eating when the baby eats even if it is six in the morning.

Did you know that over 120 million people around the world are affected by depression? I find this to be a very depressing statistic. Fortunately depression can be combated with proper dietary habits. So what is depression? Depression is one of the most common mental disorders presenting a depressed mood, loss in pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-esteem, disrupted appetite or sleep, poor concentration, and low energy levels. Depression can become either a chronic or recurrent condition leading to substantial impairments in one's ability to care for his or her everyday tasks. Unfortunately, about 850,000 people die every year due to depression related circumstances. There are five major types of depression:

Major depression.

Major depression is all around us. When one has major depression they experience symptoms such as sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in particular activities that one may have once enjoyed, weight gain/loss, under/over sleeping, low self-esteem, and thoughts of death or possibly suicide.

Dysthymia.

People who are mildly depressed during most days of the week typically have dysthymia. This condition is closely related to major depression but more mild and not as severe.

Seasonal affective disorder.

Some individuals experience a less severe type of depression during certain seasons of the year. Most occurrences of this type of depression occur during the wintertime possibly do to the lack of sunlight, causing a vitamin D deficiency and other related issues.

Postpartum depression.

Many women experience this form of depression within the first few months of giving birth. The symptoms are eerily similar to those of major depression and often interfere with the mothers desire to take care of herself and the new child.

Bipolar disorder.

This type of depression is commonly used in films depicting someone who is happy one second and angry the next second. Such a view of bipolar is taken to it's furthest extreme. Having this condition may have subtle symptoms such as feeling depressed every other day.

So what causes depression? It is generally caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters, specifically serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, and gamma-aminobutyric acid. These imbalances are caused by a number of underlying factors.

Fortunately, by providing one's body with proper nutrition, the symptoms of depression can be minimized. Any individual who wants to combat depression should include foods rich in tryptophan, zinc, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients can also be obtained through dietary supplements from the local supplement store, pharmacy, or online. Here are the following nutrients needed to fight depression:

Vitamin D.

Vitamin D can be obtained from fish oil, cows milk, soy milk, orange juice, and mushrooms. These foods may also have anti-inflammatory properties increasing the flexibility of the cell membranes, and helping the brain's neurotransmitters work properly.

Tryptophan rich foods.

Sources of tryptophan include turkey, chicken, lamb, beef, dairy, spelt, nuts, soy, tuna, beans, and salmon. Tryptophan is an amino acid that can help produce good feelings and promote better sleep.

Omega-3 rich foods.

Sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish, flaxseed, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and canola oil. Studies have shown that when people's diets are lacking in omega-3 fatty acids, they tend to have higher occurrences of mood disorders and schizophrenia.

Folate rich foods.

Sources of folate include beans, orange juice, hazelnuts, spinach, avocados, and wheat germ. Low levels of folate have also been associated with poor brain performance and depression.

Foods rich in zinc.

Sources of zinc include oysters, chicken, cheddar cheese, yogurt, beans, basil, beef, pumpkin seeds, and fortified grains. Research has shown depressive behavioral patterns associated with low zinc intake.

While the above are important to include in one's diet to prevent depression one must also avoid consuming trans fats, saturated fats, high glycemic foods, and alcohol. Also, one should avoid low-carb and high-protein diets, and skipping meals.

By following these nutritional suggestions you will be multiple steps closer to being depression free. Remember, nutrition is not the only method for fighting depression. You must use any and all methods at available to fight this sometimes chronic condition. Always tell your doctor before making significant changes to your diet.

As an OB, my patients ask me just as? many questions about breastfeeding as they ask about pregnancy itself. I don't mind at all because it is such an important topic. Over the years, I have scribbled many of these questions in my notebook so that I could research the most current information for new mothers eager to learn how to feed their babies the natural way.

Now, these questions are the basis for this week's?article which is written just for you, with a completely different mindset and format than all my previous articles. Before writing however, I decided to interview the head lactation consultant, Ms. Renate Abstoss at Stamford Hospital in Connecticut, to get a second opinion and gather her responses. Ms. Abstoss sat for the first International Board Exam for Lactation Consultants in 1985 and has continuously worked in the field since that time in California, New York, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Connecticut. She was the first lactation consultant appointed as State Certified Teacher for Bavarian Midwifery schools.

There are probably many variations of responses to these questions so please consider this information helpful, but not absolute. I welcome any additional "pearls" from other lactation consultants or experienced moms so we can share the knowledge and promote the best nutritional health for babies everywhere.

What are the most common problems that women encounter when pumping?

Dwindling milk supply is probably the foremost problem that women encounter when pumping milk. This can be attributed to many different factors.

Infrequent pumping

A working woman should try and pump every 3 hours for 10 to 15 minutes or at least for every missed feeding

Inefficient pumping

Pump being used may have inadequate pressure or not enough cycles per minute causing a decrease in the milk supply.

Lack of breast feeding

Even when mom is home from work, she should try and breast feed the baby to stimulate milk production. For convenience, babies may be bottle fed too frequently.

Painful nipples

This can be due to a bad pump due to excessive suction pressure, pumping for too long a period of time, or poor latch when the baby does breast feed.

Fatigue and exhaustion

The stress of taking care of a newborn along with pressure from work and home can result in exhaustion and fatigue which can decrease the milk supply.

How do I increase my milk supply?

There are several medications and herbal products available to help with increasing the milk supply. To increase an existing milk supply, one can take two herbal supplements in combination fenugreek and blessed thistle, both of which are available in health food stores and have no known contraindications.

The two most commonly used prescription drugs are Metoclopramide and Domperidone both of which were designed as stomach medications but were found to increase prolactin production in the brain. The medication Domperidone, (Motlium) is not approved for use in the United States and the FDA has issued warnings against the use of this drug as a galactagogue because in higher dosages, when given intravenously, Domperidooe it was associated with cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac arrest. However, the small dosages that are used when given orally to increase lactation (30-40 mg/day) and for the short duration of three to six weeks does not seem to be a great concern. Patients generally obtain this medication from Canadian pharmacies or from Mexico and Europe where it is over the counter. Studies are now being conducted by ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association) regarding the safety of domperidone.

Metoclopramide (commonly known as Reglan), used to treat severe nausea in pregnancy, has been known to have a side effect of depression so its use has to be carefully monitored in the postpartum mother. The drug can be detected in breast milk and the long term side effects to infants is unknown.

How do I treat plugged milk ducts?

Milk ducts that do not drain can cause the milk to back up resulting in a plugged milk duct. Often the the surrounding breast tissue becomes hardened and inflamed. This area can eventually become infected resulting in a mastitis requiring antibiotic therapy. Plugged ducts often occur when:

Mom misses feedings

Mom fails to pump frequently

The breast fails to empty

Nursing more frequently

Changing positioning

Improving the latch of the baby (sometimes a shield is necessary). A lactation consultant would be very instructive in this situation.

This can be a result of incorrect positioning, inadequate pressure from a pump, or restriction of milk flow from poorly fitting bras or any kind of breast trauma that damages the duct. Fatigue, stress, or failure of the baby to latch on properly can also contribute to this problem.

Standard Treatment consists of moist heat beforehand for approximately 5 minutes, empty breast as much as possible, cool compresses afterwards, and reduce swelling in between feedings. Massaging the duct towards the nipple may also be helpful. If the plug comes out, it may look like dried milk in a string. One should continue to nurse to fully clear the plug. Apply cold compresses via an ice pack or a plastic bag of frozen peas for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Fresh cabbage leaves to the area is another herbal remedy that can be used in between feedings to help with engorgement. Cabbage leaves can be left in the bra for approximately one hour until it wilts. It is important to avoid the nipple area when applying the cabbage leaf because the cabbage is caustic and can cause irritation

What do I do if the baby does not latch on?

Latch problems can depend upon the situation causing them:

It may be due to a newborn who is just learning how to latch.

Assistance from a lactation consultant can be very helpful in making sure the baby is latched deeply with a mouth very wide to get all the breast tissue. The baby should be latched well beyond the tip of the nipple. Often latching problems occur because the baby fails to flare the bottom lip.

Is it due to flat or inverted nipples?

If the problem is due to flat or inverted nipples, a suction device, pump, or nipple shield may be used to avoid engorgement by expressing the milk. This will avoid a lowered or disappearing milk supply. Different lactation consultants and hospitals may prefer one modality over another, however all agree that care has to be taken when using any device that serious trauma or damage does not occur to the nipple.

Once the baby is "educated" that the breast is his or her "food supply", generally the baby will nurse fine. It is helpful to try and get beyond the first few days when only colostrum is present, until the milk comes in. Try and avoid avoid artificial nipples at the very beginning.

Is the baby not hungry at this time?

Is there a nursing strike?

A "nursing strike" can occur if a well nursing baby, beyond the newborn period suddenly refuses to nurse. This can occur often after 4 months of age when a mother will state "my seven month old baby just suddenly weaned herself." These babies are not weaning but are actually facing a situation where nursing has become unpleasant, boring, or painful. Often these infants need to be taught to return to a functional breastfeeding pattern with increased skin to skin contact, trying to nurse in a quiet, calm environment without distractions, such as nursing at night in bed. Bottles should be avoided but spoon or cup feeding with expressed milk is acceptable. If the underlying cause is treated, most babies will happily go back to their normal nursing pattern.

Is the baby getting sick?

Causes of poor latch can be an undiagnosed ear infection, a urinary tract infection, or an upper respiratory infection. Check with your pediatrician to be sure an illness is not being missed. Maternal stress can also cause this problem.

Regardless of the problem, it is important to remove the milk as efficiently as possible if an established supply exists to avoid engorgement which will lower or cause the milk supply to disappear.

If the baby is not latching, it is important to stimulate the establishment of milk production through use of a pump.

How do I wean the baby when I have decided to transfer to a bottle?

Weaning is the time the baby transitions away from the breast. Time frames for weaning can vary from weeks to months.

Slow weaning is always more optimal. Some mothers will use the pump for weaning and stop breastfeeding entirely. One option for weaning would be to reduce the time per pumping, ie instead of pumping for 15 minutes, reduce it to 10 minutes. This can gradually be dropped down to 2 to 3 minutes per session. An alternative way to wean is to increase the interval between pumping sessions, ie from every 3 hours to every 4, 6 or even 8 hours. If desired, one can use ice packs after pumping for comfort. Also, Motrin can be used for anti-inflammatory pain relief. A comfortable, tight bra can also help with support and relief. Nursing pads can be used to prevent excess leakage. A recommended herbal remedy can be drinking 3 cups of sage tea which is available in health food stores. It has a strong and astringent taste so adding honey makes it more palatable. Do not use this if currently pregnant since it has abortive action.

On occasion, sudden weaning becomes necessary. Discomfort is generally greater since the breast continues to make milk and the breast remains engorged. Nursing can be replaced with pumping but only pump the breast to allow comfort and not to completely drain. Increase time frame between pumpings.

Three days of Sudafed can help dry up the milk production. The milk supply decreases as you feed less. The milk quality also changes becoming more salty and colostrum-like which many babies do not like. Consequently, this also helps diminish the nursing.

If you are living with lupus and contemplating having a baby there are a lot of questions you are going to want to address.

Here are the top concerns I get emailed about, and those that I will answer in my mini-series on lupus and pregnancy. (For more information right away, please visit my site below).

-Is it safe to have a baby if I have lupus?

-Will my baby get lupus too?

-Will getting pregnant cause a lupus flare? When is the best time to get pregnant?

-Can my baby be born naturally?

    -Can I breast feed?

-Is there a greater likelihood of miscarriage?

    -What is toxemia of pregnancy?

-Is there something I should do to help the pregnancy process?

-I am afraid I will get a flare from being pregnant. What if I can not take care of my child?

This article will address some of the most common questions addressed above. (Stay tuned for part 2 to follow).

1. Is it safe to have a baby if I have lupus?

During the early seventies, women were told if they had lupus they should not get pregnant. Since those days, treatment and support for lupus patients have changed however it is still an important question that must be addressed, looking at your specific illness, needs and risk factors.

Because lupus is a disease that strikes young women, predominantly in their childbearing years, pregnancy is a big concern as you well imagine. However, for most women living with lupus a successful pregnancy is possible. That being said there are 'pregnancy dos and don'ts' that you must follow during your pregnancy to avoid complications.

Here are some suggestions to support yourself before and during pregnancy:

Carefully plan your pregnancy, taking into consideration all of your needs. (For example, sufficient time off of work, support taking care of your child, sufficient time for rest, daily chores support, a house cleaner to do the most strenuous work, sufficient funds to allow for extra costs such as a nanny for the first few months etc.)

Ideally, it is best that your lupus be under control or in remission for at least 6 months before you get pregnant.

Have a strong support system in place you can rely on (For example, during a postpartum period, a stressful period or just coping with life changes etc.).

Keep a diligent record of your condition, symptoms and health fluctuations.

Plan your calendar in advance to ensure all of your necessary activities are taken care of well in advance to avoid stress. (For example, preparing the baby's room, collecting the necessary baby items such as car seats, strollers, etc. well in advance to avoid undue stress and rushing).

Create a stress-free process as much as possible to support and maintain a healthy immune system, including dietary needs. (For example, an organic foods delivery system is a great way to avoid regular grocery trips).

Take extra care of your health needs, following a nutritious healthy lupus diet, with supportive supplements (such as essential fatty acids to naturally reduce inflammation) and prepare your meals in advance (store extra meals in the freezer) to avoid extra work in the kitchen.

Avoid environmental toxins (such as painting fumes etc.) and be extra careful with situations that don't support wellness (such as cleaning products, second hand smoke or other noxious items).

Lupus pregnancies are considered high risk!

Being pregnant while living with lupus is considered a high-risk pregnancy. As mentioned above, it is especially important that you find an obstetrician (OB) who is experienced in managing high-risk pregnancies and someone you feel confident in. This person may or may not be your regular OB; however having an expert on hand (at minimum for a second opinion) is highly advisable

The biggest risk to your baby is premature birth. Births before 36 weeks are considered premature.

Here are some statistics concerning the risks of pregnancy and lupus:

About 50% of lupus pregnancies end before 40 weeks (9 months), usually because of the complications previously discussed.Babies born after 30 weeks, or weighing more than 3 pounds, usually do well and grow normally Premature babies may have these problems, but in modern neonatal units they can be easily treated:

-Difficulty breathing

-Developing jaundice

-Becoming anemic

Even babies as small as 1 pound, 4 ounces have survived and have been healthy in every way; but the outcome is uncertain for babies of this size. There is one congenital abnormality that occurs only to babies of lupus mothers (neonatal lupus, described below)There is no unusual frequency of mental retardation in babies of lupus mothers

Of course, the most important question lupus patients as is: will my baby be ok? The answer is, in most cases, yes. Babies born to women living with lupus have no greater chance of birth defects or mental retardation than any other baby.

Approximately 3% of babies born to moms with lupus will also have neonatal lupus. This will include temporary rash and abnormal blood counts. This usually will disappear by the time the child is between 3 and 6 months old and will not recur.About 50% of babies with neonatal lupus are born with a heart condition. This condition is typically permanent and treatable with a pacemaker. You should discuss this possibility with your doctor.About 33% of people with lupus have an antibody known as the anti-Ro, or anti-SSA, antibody.About 10% of women with anti-Ro antibodies-about 3% of all women with lupus-will have a baby with a syndrome known as "neonatal lupus."

Neonatal lupus is not SLE. Neonatal lupus consists of:

-A transient rash

-Transient blood count abnormalities

-Sometimes a special type of heart beat abnormality. If the heart beat abnormality occurs, which is very rare, it is treatable but it is permanent.

Neonatal lupus is the only type of congenital abnormality found in children of mothers with lupus.

For babies with neonatal lupus who do not have the heart problem, there is no trace of the disease by 3-6 months of age, and it does not recur. Even babies with heart beat abnormality problems grow normally. If a mother has had one child with neonatal lupus, there is about a 25% chance of having another child with the same problem.

There is only a small chance that the child will develop systemic lupus erythematosus later in life.

3. Will getting pregnant cause a lupus flare?

Flares during pregnancy are most common during the first or second trimester or during the first few months following delivery.

Stress (both chronic and acute) plays a significant role in increasing your risk of a flare, so you must do all that you can to manage it.

The presence of lupus nephritis before conception also increases the chance of having complications during pregnancy. These concerns should be discussed with your doctor, as each person's situation and physical constitution is very different.

Most flares that do occur are mild and treated easily with corticosteroids.

The most common symptoms of these flares are:

-Arthritis

-Rash

-Fatigue

Remember, in some situations a flare is difficult to differentiate between lupus and pregnancy.

Certain abnormalities in lupus laboratory tests may be due to pregnancy rather than to lupus:

Approximately 33% of women with lupus will have a decrease in platelet count during pregnancyAbout 20% of women with lupus will have an increase in protein in the urine, or new occurrence of protein in the urine

These levels usually recover after delivery

4. When Is The Best Time To Get Pregnant?

The answer is simple: when you are at your healthiest.

Women in lupus remission have much less trouble than do women with active disease. It is important to remember that woman who conceive after 5 to 6 months of remission are less likely to experience a lupus flare than those who get pregnant while in a current flare.

Good health rules are essential:

-Eat well; you must follow a healthy diet for lupus (see site below for a specific diet for lupus guidelines)

-Take medications as prescribed

-Visit your doctor(s) regularly

-Don't smoke

-Don't drink

-Certainly don't use recreational drugs

-Listen to your body and follow its needs, (pushing through pain or fatigue is not advised, get the rest your body needs)

When you are in remission there is every reason to be hopeful that you can conceive a healthy child and maintain your health, especially if you are diligent with your health and get the support of medical (and alternative) health specialists.

You must support your body and immune system with a proper diet for lupus which will not only support your health, but that of your future child. To learn more about at lupus diet dos and don'ts please visit the site below.

Your delivery should also be in a hospital, so you have access to specialized care and equipment you or your baby may need.

Lupus pregnancies are considered high risk. You should not attempt home delivery or be overly concerned about natural delivery, since complications during delivery can occur.

Anorexia affects primarily women as statistics show that ninety five percent of anorexics are women. The average age range for anorexia also falls during the childhood bearing years and becoming pregnant while having an eating disorder can be detrimental to both mother and child. Eating disorders also affect fertility- especially anorexia- as women who have eating disorders often times have irregular menstrual cycles or none at all.

The Dangers Associated with Anorexia during Pregnancy

There are numerous detrimental effects primarily due to malnutrition which an eating disorder such as anorexia can cause during pregnancy. These include effects to the fetus such as, delayed fetal growth, premature birth, low birth weight, and even stillbirth. Anorexia can also cause complications during labor and the risk for having to undergo a cesarean birth is much higher.

Respiratory problems and gestational diabetes are also more common in pregnant women with an eating disorder. The chances are also higher for postpartum depression as well as problems with breastfeeding. Taking laxatives or diuretics during pregnancy can also cause harmful effects to the fetus as they are not able to receive the necessary nutrition due to the fact that these take away the important fluids and nutrients which the fetus needs to grow.

Precautions you should take When Becoming Pregnant with an Eating Disorder

It is essential for your overall health as well as the health of your baby that as soon as you discover you are pregnant to schedule an appointment for prenatal care and inform your doctor right away that you have an eating disorder.

Schedule regular group therapy and individual counseling sessions as well as guidance from a nutritionist who can help you maintain your weight. It is also essential that after giving birth you continue maintaining your nutritional health as well as treatment for your disorder as bringing a new baby into the world can bring you great joy but can also be a very stressful time which can intensify the symptoms of anorexia.

Alopecia

1.-Concept
2.-Causes
3.-Types of alopecia
4.-Treatment

Concept

The term alopecia defines hair loss. It can be triggered by various causes. The life cycle of hair consists of three phases: the growth phase or anagen phase lasting 2 to 6 years, the intermediate phase or cagagen phase with a duration of 2 to 3 weeks, and lastly the dislodgement or falling phase, with a duration of three months. During this last phase it is normal for between 50 and 100 hairs to fall out a day. Baldness is generated when the transition phase (catagen phase) exceeds the growth phase (Anagen phase).

Causes Some of the factors that influence hair loss are:

o Seasons: Spring and autumn are the most common seasons for hair loss.
o Oral contraceptives: Hair loss can be accelerated by the effects of the male hormone contained in some contraceptives.
o Lack of iron: This problem is more common in women especially if they have heavy or long periods.
o Diet: vegetarians, people who have a low protein diet and patients with anorexia nervosa may be protein deficient. As a result, in about three months time there can be a massive loss of hair.
o Postpartum: after childbirth some hair may enter the resting phase and begin to fall out.
o Stress and illness: you can begin to lose hair after a stressful situation. A high fever, severe infections or chronic diseases can also cause hair loss.
o Medications: Some drugs used in chemotherapy cause hair to stop cell division. This can cause loss of up to 90% of hair, but in most cases the hair will begin to re-grow once the treatment ends.
o Heredity: baldness may be genetic.
o Burns and traumas.

Types of Alopecia

We can distinguish between different types of alopecia. The most common types include: Scar less Alopecia: -Androgenetic alopecia: Also known as common alopecia as it is the most frequent form of alopecia. Hair loss starts from age 18, and is apparent between the ages of 25 and 30. In this type of hair loss, lost hair is replaced by increasingly thinner and shorter hair follicles, and in some cases even transparent hair. This type of alopecia is inherited from both father and mother. In these cases there is an abundance of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a male hormone within the hair follicle. DHT causes the atrophy of the follicle, reducing the growth cycle. Although the follicle is technically alive, each time it grows back even smaller. Some follicles just die, but most are smaller, and fluffier.

As the Anagen phase remains very short, more hair begins to fall out, gradually thinning until it becomes so fine that it can not resist daily combing. Baldness turns a long, thick, pigmented hair into thin, clear and short hair. This type of hair loss has a very distinctive pattern in men (male pattern baldness) affecting primarily the area above the temples with a receding hair line, as well as thinning hair on crown of the head. In women, this type of alopecia usually starts between age 20 and 30, with a gradual thinning of hair all over the head, hair miniaturization, and a no receding of the hair line. About 2 out of every 3 men experience a significant negative impact on their self esteem due to alopecia.

-Alopecia diffusa: Characterized by thinning hair (acute or chronic) and is due to a cycle interruption of the follicular anagen phase or telogen phase. In this type of alopecia only the hair follicles of the scalp are affected. There is no change in hair follicles from other parts of the body. It affects both men and women.

Telogen Effluvium: Consists of sudden and widespread hair loss due to causes such as stress, fever, abortion, endocrinological diseases, infectious diseases, surgery, etc... It is the most common form of postpartum alopecia because after birth, much of the follicles enter the Telogen phase (30%) and in the end fall out. Normally appears to 2-3 months after delivery and returns spontaneously in a few months.

-Alopecia Areata: Characterized by a hair loss occurring in round smooth patches, that takes place in one or more limited areas of the scalp or body. Its origin is unclear, but more and more studies suggest that alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in which the body produces antibodies against a part of the hair follicle. Stressful situations can also cause the appearance of this type of alopecia. Can occur in both men and women, but most often affects youth.

-Traumatic Alopecia: Produced by different physical traumas. This type of hair loss can be caused by the individual person (Trichotillomania) or pull or tension caused by tight hairstyles like braids, bows, etc ... Trichotillomania: Consists of compulsive hair pulling. Is often set before age 17, and may be due to a need to draw the attention or a nervous tic.

Scarring alopecia

-Infectious Alopecia: . Mycosis (kerion, candidiasis, favus) . Bacterial (syphilis, leprosy, necrotic acne) . Viral (herpes, chickenpox). Protozoal (Leishmaniasis)

- Traumatic Alopecia: . Traffic accidents . Ionizing Radiation (Therapeutic) . Thermal burns or frostbite.

- Chronic Inflammatory Dermatosis Alopecia: . Discoid Lupus Erythematosus . Lichen Planus Pilaris . Folliculitis Decalvans

Treatment

Alopecia treatments that stand out are: -Minoxidil. An oral medication used to control high blood pressure. Patients taking Minoxidil showed noticeable hair growth. Therefore, for over 10 years it has been used is used in topical solutions to the control hair loss. Today it is one of the most effective treatments of androgenetic alopecia and other types of hair loss, including alopecia areata patches, total scalp hair loss, or universal hair loss. Comment: Minoxidil solutions make the hair oilier, so the head should be washed more frequently and with a proper shampoo. It is advised to wash the hair 1-2 times a week. Some patients may experience transitional itching and slight flaking on treatment areas; this should not be a reason to stop the treatment. Contraindications: Allergy to Minoxidil or its transmitter (propylene). Pregnancy.

- Antiandrogens. Reduce the male hormone (DHT) that causes baldness. DHT is an androgen (male hormone) competing for a place in the hair follicle receptors. If follicle receptors are occupied by other agents, DHT cannot enter the hair follicle and therefore does not induce aggressive action. The problem is that by blocking DHT, elsewhere in the body signs of feminization may begin to show in men. In contrast, in women this block is less problematic.

Within this group we find Finasteride, a type II 5-alpha reductasa inhibitor. This makes the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The type II 5-alpha reductase is located mainly in the follicles of the scalp and the urogenital tract. The inhibition of the type II enzyme prevents the destructive action of DHT in hair follicles.

- Surgical techniques: include hair transplants, grafts, implants, etc ...

Conclusion

Hereditary hair loss is not curable, but it is controllable, and the sooner be treated the better. Currently there is not a perfect treatment for androgenetic alopecia, but there are drugs that stop hair loss and prolong the life of hair follicles. We must consider the present and future hair treatments because hair needs living hair follicles. With baldness follicles are miniaturized and die after 5-10 years. With any treatment you will get better results with more follicles that remain alive. Many other hair problems are temporary and can be treated by dietary measures and other measures. In these cases, good dietary habits as well as eating supplements of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants help to stop hair loss and regain normal growth after a few months. For more information about hair loss, consult your dermatologist, because skin diseases include diseases of the hair and nails. Do not be influenced by advertisements for "hair tonic" or by hairdressing specialists.

The Health Benefits of DHA

Docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, is a polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid found throughout the body. It is a major structural fat in the brain and retina accounting for up to 97% of the omega-3 fats in the brain and up to 93% of the omega-3 fats in the retina. It is also a key component of the heart. Numerous studies confirm that everyone, from infants to adults, benefits from an adequate supply of DHA.

DHA omega-3 is naturally found throughout the body and is most abundant in the brain, eyes and heart. DHA is critical for healthy brain and eye development and function and has been shown to support heart health from infancy through adulthood.

DHA serves as a primary building block for the brain and the eye. Just as calcium is essential for building strong bones, DHA ensures that the cells in the brain, retina, heart, and other parts of the nervous system develop and function properly.

DHA plays an important role in the following:

• Memory function
• Brain and central nervous system development and function
• Psychomotor development (such as eye-hand coordination)
• Visual development and function
• Heart health
• Nerve signal transmission

Understanding the Role that Each Omega-3 Plays: Today, more and more food products claim to be a good source of omega-3s, but not all omega-3s are created equal. There are three major omega-3 fatty acids: DHA, EPA and ALA. Each one plays a distinct role in the body.

The Benefits of DHA Throughout the Lifecycle

Docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid that is found throughout the body. More specifically, it is a major structural fat in the brain and eyes and a key component of the heart. Numerous studies confirm that everyone, from infants to adults, benefits from an adequate supply of DHA.

• Maternal Health
• Infant Development
• Beyond Infancy
• Adult Health

The Importance of DHA in maternal Well-Being

DHA is a major structural fatty acid in the brain and retina, and is naturally found in breast milk. It is important for a mother to consume adequate amounts of DHA during pregnancy and while nursing to support her well-being and the health of her infant.

• DHA supplementation during pregnancy was shown to increase the length of gestation by about six days helping mothers carry to a healthy or full term.
• Increasing dietary intake of DHA during pregnancy and postpartum may help to support a mother's emotional well-being.
• Maternal DHA supplementation resulted in mental development advantages in children including improved psychomotor development (such as eye-hand coordination) at 2.5 years of age and improved attention skills at 5 years of age.
• A study using a statistical model of risk-benefit, designed by Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, estimated that increasing maternal DHA intake by 100mg/day increases child IQ by 0.13 points.

DHA in Infant Development
• DHA is important for healthy visual and mental development throughout infancy. Studies with both preterm and term infants suggest that adequate DHA nutrition, provided through either breastmilk or DHA-fortified formula, is associated with optimal mental and visual development and function.
• Major brain growth occurs during the second trimester of pregnancy and throughout the first two years of life. During these times, the infant has the greatest need for DHA.
• Developing infants cannot efficiently produce their own DHA.
• DHA and ARA supplemented infant formula was shown to be a good source of these nutrients for formula-fed babies and has been recommended for inclusion in infant formulas by several scientific bodies worldwide.

DHA Beyond Infancy

• DHA is important for ongoing brain growth and development in children. It is also important for brain, eye and heart function throughout life. The body will continue to turn over DHA throughout the lifecycle and it is important to replenish the stores of DHA in our bodies. While the body can convert DHA from its precursor fatty acids, this process is inefficient and varies from person to person. It is therefore important for children (and adults) to obtain adequate amounts of DHA directly from their diet.

• During the early childhood years (ages 2 and 6) the brain and eyes experience significant growth. In fact, between birth and 5 years of age, the human brain increases approximately 3.5-fold in mass and DHA content increases from 1 gram to approximately 4.5 grams. Due to the major growth during this time and because DHA represents up to 97% of the omega-3 fatty acids in the brain and up to 93% of the omega-3 fatty acids in the retina, the brain and eyes have significant requirements for preformed DHA.

DHA in Adult Health

• DHA is important for ongoing brain, eye and heart health. It is also important for brain, eye and heart function throughout life. Throughout our lifecycle, the body will continue to turnover DHA and it is important to replenish the stores of DHA in our bodies. While the body can convert DHA from its precursor fatty acids, this process is inefficient. It is therefore important for adults to obtain adequate amounts of DHA in their diets.

Brain and Eye Health

• DHA is the predominant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain and eyes and is necessary for the optimal structure and function of nerve cells in the brain and eyes. In the brain, DHA is especially concentrated in the region responsible for complex thinking skills.
• A recently published large, randomized, placebo-controlled nutritional study in Alzheimer's & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association has demonstrated the benefits of algal DHA in improving memory in older adults. This study found that the cognitive improvement demonstrated by the DHA supplemented group was equivalent to having the learning and memory skills of someone more than three years younger.* No study using a fish oil source of DHA has found this significant benefit.
• A scientific review on DHA stressed the significant role that DHA plays in the maintenance of normal neurological function.
• There is preliminary research exploring the possible role of DHA in neurological function. Promising results from animal model and human-cell model studies suggest DHA may play a role in reducing the risk of certain neurological diseases. Additional research in humans is needed to evaluate the effect of DHA supplementation on preventing or treating these neurological disorders. Further research is also needed to determine the exact mechanism of action. A Japanese animal-model study found that DHA supplementation reduced the increase in number of reference and working memory errors and increased the antioxidative defenses suggesting DHA as a possible agent for ameliorating learning deficiencies due to Alzheimer's.
• The results of a human-cell model study showed that DHA intake may lower the accumulation of a protein that is associated with brain aging and Alzheimer's disease.
• An animal-model study showed that DHA may protect against the accumulation of a protein believed to be linked to Alzheimer's disease.

Cardioprotective Effects of DHA

• DHA is also a key component of the cardiovascular system. In the past 25 years, there have been over 4,500 studies of the cardiovascular effects of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as DHA.
• Although the exact relationship between DHA and the cardiovascular system is still being studied, observational and intervention studies support an association between DHA and good cardiovascular health.
• Based on the current body of research, several scientific bodies have made recommendations regarding the intake of omega-3 fatty acids and good cardiovascular health.

Controlling Blood Lipids

• Controlling blood lipids (total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol), high density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol)) and triglycerides is important for reducing the risk of developing heart disease.
• One of the cardioprotective effects of DHA appears to be helping to normalize certain blood lipids. Three independent research studies in subjects with normal blood lipids have demonstrated a statistically significant drop (14-26 percent) in triglycerides and a trend toward higher HDL levels over baseline lipid levels after supplementation with high doses of DHA (more than 1.5g DHA/day) for 2-15 weeks. A fourth study showed similar blood lipid changes in the DHA group compared to the placebo group.

Controlling Blood Pressure

Controlling blood pressure is also important for maintaining cardiovascular health. One study found that DHA had modest blood pressure lowering effects in mildly hyperlipidemic men. Multiple human trials report small reductions in blood pressure with intake of omega-3 fatty acid.

• 5 to 6 mmHg in systolic pressure and 3 to 5 mmHg in diastolic pressure
- Dose: 3-6 grams of n-3 fatty acids (EPA plus DHA) over 6 weeks. DHA may have greater benefits than EPA

Cancer prevention

• Epidemiological studies have shown a reduced risk of developing breast, colon, or prostate cancer. DHA and EPA inhibited growth and metastasis of breast cancer cells in animal study. DHA directly suppressed arachidonic acidinduced colon cancer cell growth
Dietary Sources of DHA: Dietary sources of DHA include:
• Algae - Certain algae are natural sources of DHA. And while most people believe that fish produce their own DHA, in fact, it's the algae they feed on that make them a rich source of DHA.
• Seafood/Fatty fish,Walnuts, Wheat germ oil,Flaxeed oil/canola oil, Fish liver oils
• Organ meat such as liver,Small amounts are found in egg yolks are the good sourses of DHA.

Other Vegetable Sources
Grams/100 g edible portion
• Flaxseed 22.8g
• Walnuts 3.3 - 6.8g
• Soybeans (roasted) 1.5g
• Soybeans (raw) 3.2g
• Oats (germ) 1.4g
• Seaweed (spirulina) 0.8g
(Adapted from: Kris-Etherton et al. Polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food chain in the US. Am J Clin Nutr. 2000;71:180S).

Recommendations: For Infants & Children

• The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infant milk formula should provide at least 2.7% of total kilocalories in the form of linoleic acid.
• Of note, human milk provides 3.5% to as high as 12% of total kilocalories in the form of linoleic acid depending on the fat composition of the maternal diet.

For Infants and Children
0-6 months 0.5 g/day of n-3 PUFA
7-12 months 0.5 g/day of n-3 PUFA
1-3 yrs 0.7 g/day of a-linolenic acid

Losing one's hair can have a major emotional impact and cause much anguish in the long run. Studies indicate that perceptions of bald or balding men compared to men that have hair is that they are less physically attractive, less assertive, less successful and older. Although hair loss in women is not as common as it is in men, it can also result in the same perceptions of less attractive, less successful and older.

Abnormal hair loss is called alopecia. There are many different types of alopecia, including androgenic alopecia, alopecia areata and postpartum alopecia. Androgenic alopecia is the result of genetics, age and hormonal changes. In men it is known as male pattern baldness which usually progressed to the familiar horseshoe-shaped hair. In women it shows up as a generalized thinning over the entire crown area.

Alopecia areata is characterized by the sudden falling out of hair in round patches or baldness in spots. It can occur on the scalp or anywhere else on the body. It is an autoimmune disease that causes the affected hair follicles to be mistakenly attacked by a person's own immune system. Alopecia areata usually starts with one or more small, round, smooth bald patches on the scalp and can progress to total hair loss.

Postpartum alopecia is the temporary hair loss that women can experience at the conclusion of a pregnancy. Usually the growth cycle of the hair will return within one year after the baby is born.

There are many different options for people suffering from hair loss today. One is medication. A popular topical medication is Minoxidil, which is sold over the counter. Minoxidil is applied to the scalp twice a day and can be effective for some. There is also prescription medication for men that may be more effective than Minoxidil. But many prescription medications have side effects such as weight gain and loss of sexual function.

The second option is hair transplant surgery. Transplants, also known as hair plugs, are the most common permanent hair replacement technique. In the procedure, a small section of hair is removed from an area where there is a lot of hair. The entire hair follicle, papilla and bulb is removed and transplanted to the new location. Typical costs for this type of surgery ranges from $8,000-$20,000 and up.

The third option is to use wigs, toupees, hair weaving, hair extensions or hair integrations. Wigs and toupees can be custom designed using either human hair or synthetic hair. They have come a long way and can create a very natural looking style. Hair weaving involves sewing pieces of human or synthetic hair into the natural hair to create a fuller, long hair style look. Hair extensions are similar to hair weaving since you are attaching human or synthetic hair to the natural hair. Except hair extensions are attached by one of several different methods using adhesives, locs, links or clips. Hair integrations are custom designed nets with hair attached or even man-made skin with hair attached that are attached, typically using medical grade adhesives directly to the scalp to create a fuller hair style.

There can be complications to hair weaving, hair extensions and hair integrations. If they are not attached properly, by a trained hair stylist, the hair loss situation of the client can become worse, resulting in permanent hair loss with the extension hair pulling the natural hair out. Always consult with a professionally trained hair stylist that has experience with hair loss situations.

In short, hair loss may have a major emotional impact on many people. But as technology advances there are many more options for men and women suffering from hair loss.

You've most likely heard every doctor and health care professional say that breastfeeding new babies is the best nutrition there is. Not only is it the natural way to feed your baby, but the health benefits are enormous. Here are a few great reasons to breastfeed your newborn baby.

1. Fat is vital to your newborn. Why? Because most all of the essential vitamins and nutrients that your baby needs, comes from fat. It gives vitamin A - D and E, and at the same time provides the necessary calories your baby requires. Breastfeeding gives your baby these vital nutrients to keep them healthy.

2. Milk from a cow can often times create an allergic reaction in a newborn infant. Breastfeeding reactions are extremely rare.

3. Milk from breastfeeding has many hormones and growth factors in it that assist your baby in growing and keeping healthy.

4. It's a fact that breastfeeding babies are healthier. They have lower risks of getting infections, illnesses and meningitis. Another important aspect is that a breast fed baby is 5-6 times less likely of getting childhood lymphoma. They are also much less likely to get ear infections than their bottle fed counterparts.

5. Another important reason for breastfeeding your baby has to do with staying fit. Research has been done and shows that breast fed babies are more fit and have a lower risk of becoming obese when they grow up. Why? It has been determined that bottle fed infants have much more insulin in their system which causes the fat cells to increase. We all know that obese children are more likely to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular diseases as they grow older.

6. Breast fed babies have also shown to be healthier than formula fed babies. They have reduced rates of sickness, ear infections, allergies, and even hospital visits.

7. Breastfeeding also creates a sense of security and bonding with their mother. No bottle fed baby gets this added sense of security. A baby gets a sense of comfort, safety and joy by being nursed from their mother.

8. A breastfeeding mother gets an added plus by being able to lose the extra pre-birth weight and regain their pre-pregnancy size. It's also great for fighting off the postpartum depression that can easily strike a new mom.

9. Breast milk is free. You can save your money by not having to buy formula. And it is readily available.

10. When breastfeeding your newborn, colostrum is what your baby will first feed on. It gives your baby all the nutrients and vitamins an infant needs. In addition, colostrum has the necessary amounts of immunoglobulins which keeps your baby from getting bacterial and viral infections.

Only you can determine is breastfeeding is right for you. I encourage you to take the time to seriously consider it. Learn all that you can and make a well informed decision that is in the best interests of you and your baby.

Most first-time mothers say that isolation is one of the big challenges of caring for a newborn. It is easy to stay home and become isolated as it can feel quite challenging to get out with a baby. (Some mothers feel embarrassed when a baby is crying in public and can't wait to go back home). Feeding, changing, bathing and settling the baby are all new tasks a first-time mother needs to learn to perform. Not having somebody around at home a mother may not be sure if she is doing things the right way when caring for the baby. Also a new mother needs to find time to take care of her own needs. Problems may arise if a mother is isolated and does not get social support. For example, a mother may develop a postpartum depression and it may go unnoticed, posing a risk to herself and her baby. Or a baby may not reach important developmental milestones for some reason; the a baby's condition may get worse as time passes without anybody around to point it out and recommend appropriate professional intervention. Family, friends and professionals, like doctors and nurses, midwives, lactation specialists, trained coaches and support groups should be there for the mother from the day the baby is born and especially throughout the baby's first year (and even earlier, during pregnancy).

Family and friends can give emotional and hands-on support to the first-time mother. Immediate family and some friends can be there for the mother 24/7, especially during the first several weeks after delivery of the baby. A woman's mother or sister can help her feed and change a baby, especially if a mother decides to go to work full or part-time shortly after delivery. A husband/partner can go shopping for groceries and diapers. A friend can take the baby for a stroll in the neighborhood if the mother needs a break to do something. Each family tries to figure out what works for their baby and themselves. Family and friends can remind the mother to make appointments with a pediatrician for regular checkups.

Specialists, like pediatricians and nurses, midwives, lactation specialists and trained coaches provide mostly informational support. They assess the baby's health and recommend a treatment if the baby needs it. Some states, like New Mexico have programs like the First Born program where a trained coach pays home visits. One First Born coach has said, "The voluntary program offers all first-time families of newborns (including adopting parents) the opportunity for free home visits by a trained coach who provides them with information, support and encouragement as they deal with the joys and challenges of parenthood." This is a great program for first-time mothers who live far from their families and have no friends around.

It is essential for the mother to find support groups where women support each other to clarify challenging areas in parenting and in life in general. It is quite an accomplishment to get to the first meeting and is not to be underestimated. The group is a safe place to practice feeding and the handling of crying in public. Mothers in groups like La Leche League share helpful tips and information between each other, answer questions and clarify doubts. It is important for the mother to spend some time outside the home in a group with other mothers who can understand and support her.

Without the social support it would be very difficult for the mother to take care of her baby and herself. Being isolated, she would struggle and have problems. Family, friends, professionals and support groups form a social support circle that helps a first-time mother so she can enjoy and delight in her new baby.

When pregnant, a woman has to be keen enough and be watchful on all foods, beverages, medicines, and others that she will take in. Anything that you ingest should surely affect not only your health as the mother but as well as your unborn child inside your womb. You don't want your child to be born having impaired abilities physically and cognitively, as well as the possibilities of acquiring certain diseases. No mother would want that to happen to her child.

As a mother, you should follow a balanced diet program and should observe a healthy lifestyle for your baby. Amongst the many essential nutrients needed for a pregnant mother to stay healthy as well as her child, omega 3 fatty acid plays a significant role in promoting good health during pregnancy. In fact, many researches conducted have shown that it has positive roles and effects on the child when taken properly by the mother. Recommended fish oil dosage on pregnancy is necessary.

The most recent research has been reported that adequate omega 3 fatty acid dosage on pregnancy initiated the increase of birth weight, boosted coordination, reduced the risk of diabetes, and promoted a growth surge in the brain at first three months of pregnancy.

Through an adequate intake of fish oil by the mother, surely the human infant will live healthy and develop better. It is known that a child needs ample amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for proper growth and development. Fish oil contains these fatty acids needed that are very beneficial in the child's growing brain, for his or her cardiovascular health, development of retina, and all others.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that a pregnant mother should utilize 12 ounces of fish oil per week. This recommended dosage on pregnancy will surely help the mother to less likely experience the postpartum depression, which mothers don't really want to experience after bearing her child. The dosage could as well depend on the advice of the health care provider. It could be more or less than the recommended intake of the FDA and you should strictly follow what your doctor tells you. You should be aware that consuming a high level of omega 3 fatty acid whether or not during pregnancy could harm anyone. Too much of a something is indeed harmful as what a famous cliche says.

Therefore, if you want to be successful as a mother and to have a healthy baby, the secret is to take the right quantity of omega 3 fatty acid throughout your pregnancy. You should also consult your most trusted physician and talk to him about the diet you are in.

Fish oil is a natural and rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oils, commonly known as omega 3 oils, provide essential fatty acids in the form of DHA and EPA. Both these nutrients are not found in adequate amounts in our body, mainly due to genetic deficiencies and improper or inadequate diet. In order to address this deficiency, doctors recommend either directly drinking fish oil in its pure form or using omega 3 oils in the form of capsules available on the market as supplements.

DHA and EPA are important for the prevention of so many diseases that it's difficult to mention them all here. These diseases are very common among men and women alike. The most notable of these diseases are cancer, mental illnesses (mainly psychological including postpartum depression), arthritis, coronary heart disease, respiratory problems (especially asthma), complicated pregnancies, abnormal infant growth, premature birth, improper functioning of the nervous system, and problems related to the stomach and the digestive system.

Omega 3 oils are becoming increasingly popular among people because they are easy to intake and provide long-term nutritional benefits. As a rule of thumb, keep in mind that omega 3 fatty acids reduce swelling throughout the body. Oily fish like herring, salmon, trout and tuna are high in omega 3 oils. In addition to essential fatty acids, pure fish oil also contains some levels of toxic substances like mercury, and high levels of vitamin A and D.

Because of this reason, it's very important to consider how the fish oil you are about to consume was processed and whether it conforms to the rules of the Food Standards Agency in the UK or not. For this purpose, always find a supplement product that has been molecularly distilled and made from pharmaceutical grade fish oil.

The human body is incapable of producing DHA and EPA itself. However, alpha linolenic acid (ALA), which is found in fish oil and some plant oils as well such as canola and flax seed, can be used by the body to manufacture other fatty acids important for long-term health. In order to ensure adequate amounts of all these nutrients in the body, omega 3 oils supplement products should be consumed.

However, these supplements should be used with care since overdose may have many harmful side effects associated with it. Especially, people with diabetes and high blood pressure need to be extra cautious with too much intake of DHA and EPA to ensure proper health and well-being.

In women, hair loss is commonly connected to stress, hormonal imbalances, intake of oral contraceptives and psychosomatic disorders. More specifically, women usually suffer from:

  • Postpartum alopecia: it generally appears 1-6 months after childbirth and may last for 3-6 months or more.

  • Alopecia from oral contraceptives: oral contraceptives used continuously for long periods, often causes a progressive loss of hair. This form of alopecia affects the frontal and temporal region and is usually associated with excessive sebum secretion. Hair loss occurs due to the transformation of progesterone compounds into androgens.

  • Hormonal alopecia: it is the most frequent cause of hair loss in women and occurs due to hormonal imbalances that may develop into a state of hyperandrogenism. It affects the frontal area and is often associated with acne, increased hair growth on the face and body, disorders of menstruation and increased sexual desire. Hormonal alopecia can also be hereditary: in this case it typically appears between the ages of 15 and 45 years. If it appears after menopause it may progress slowly and it usually affects the top of the head.

  • Telogen effluvium: it is usually caused by prolonged stress, dieting, psychosomatic disorders, iron deficiency, or metabolic disorders such as diabetes and thyroid malfunction.

  • Iatrogenic alopecia or externally traumatic alopecia may occur after taking antidepressants, anticoagulants and can also be the result of chemotherapy.

How to stop hair loss in women naturally:

To prevent baldness you must eat healthy and fresh foods. For example, raw vegetables can be very helpful. The absence or the low intake of protein, reduces the diameter of the bulb of the hair, so try to eat high quality protein every day.

Foods that can fight the problem include red or white meat and fish, which are excellent sources of protein. Obviously it is not advisable to eat red meat every day, so try to eat a lot of chicken, fish or even legumes. Beans, peas and lentils are indeed very rich in vegetable proteins and can replace red meat and provide your body with all the necessary nutrients. Fish is also rich in fatty acids, called omega-3, which are antioxidants that slow down the aging of the cells and promote the health of the scalp. It has also been scientifically proven that zinc and iron are very important for healthy hair, but a balanced diet is not always enough to provide your body with the right amount of these substances. In this case you can take supplements in the form of tablets.

Are you worried about stretch mark scars?  Of course you are.  This is very common among both men and women and I know you are anxious to avoid getting scars, or if you already have them, to get rid of your stretch marks.

One of the main causes of stretch marks in women is pregnancy.  Another factor in both men and women is rapid weight gain brought on by any given number of factors.

One of the causes of sudden changes in weight during formative teenage years is production of hormones during puberty. Body builders or athletes can find that stretch marks will develop if their muscles grow more rapidly than normally would occur.  Many assume that this particular type of scar is only found in women who have given birth, but the bodily changes that cause the skin to stretch abnormally and create this condition affects both males and females,

Seventy five to eight five percent of postpartum women will experience these unsightly scars for a period of time. The marks brought about by this skin stretching and hormonal change are not dangerous and with the exception of being unsightly and causing some new mothers to experience embarrassment, are not a cause for concern

You can avoid having to deal with this condition if you are proactive during your pregnancy and conscientiously act to give your body what it needs in your diet.  As your unborn child grows inside you, it will consume nutrients that need to be replenished.  Concentrate on making sure that your diet contains lots of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables - all of these are rich in Vitamin E.  If your diet lacks these valuable fruits and vegetables, a Vitamin E supplement should be considered.

If you are able to keep up with proper nutrition, massage and exfoliation, your skin should stay soft and supple and you can prevent these ugly scars from forming in the first place.  This is especially true during and after the second trimester of your pregnancy.

There are various treatments to get rid of them but once the marks start darkening it becomes more difficult to remove them.

There are many natural remedies and homemade scar removal solutions for Stretch Marks, the most effective products for removing these scars can often be found right in your own home.

I have discovered that stretch mark scars are completely treatable.  Almost any scar, no matter how or when you got it, can be faded or completely eliminated.

The question that is on your mind is how can you know what works, and how can you afford the scar treatment?  You can start by finding a resource that explains scar removal solutions that really work.  Scar treatments that are natural, safe and that will not cost you thousands of dollars.

This solution really works!  But you must want to put into action what you learn.

Maybe you were not fortunate enough to find out how to prevent stretch marks and now you are desperate to get rid of your scars.  This will only work if you are ready to take action and follow through. Don't use your scars as an excuse to not interact with people.

Many of the people we know and meet every day have experienced some kind of depression in their lives, it is not always the clinical and sever depression that we understand to be very dangerous and naturally dramatic in life events, a lot of people experience mild and sometimes passing phases of depression.

The understanding of how difficult it is to deal with depression once it hits is usually a part that is played only by those unfortunate enough to experience this mental condition, once a person realizes the effect a depression might have on a person they will immediately show great sympathy to anyone who is suffering any symptoms related to depression.

In our day and age it is very common to refer to medicine in almost any case of discomfort or disease, our society nurtures the feeling that for every physical or mental condition or disorder there is a chemical answer that sets things right, and that the materialism of human nature is once that takes care of itself. The case with depression is different, not saying that depression is not treated by medicine because it has been treated with many different kind of chemical solutions for the last few decades, but there are more ways to fight and beat depression, and many of these ways are not medicine related.

Many of the people who suffer depression in one part of their lives realize that this is a kind of condition that might return and hit them in later stages in life, this understanding makes depression patients seek answers that will have a significant effect throughout a long period of time. This is typical of people who suffered mild depression symptoms and overcame the depression with some psychological help and a lot of self work and efforts. Many want to keep living their life with a feeling that a non medical solution is available to keep depression from hitting again.

Help for depression is widely available in most of the world, the awareness to the dangers and destructive power of depression disorders have increased the efforts to help depression patients fight this condition, from traditional therapy to many new and modern approaches to physical activity and social connections, solutions that have been showing fairly good results in many cases and encourage depression patients to keep working on depression prevention instead of relaying on the easy use of chemicals.

The fact that depression can, in some mild and not clinical severe, be beaten and prevented on a regular basis using therapy and social connections, as well as physical exercise and workout routine, is very comforting for the many people who suffer mild depression around the world and that are not interested in developing any kind of dependency on chemicals and medicines for mental conditions. It is also said that the fact that depression patients are kept on a regular treatment and are aware of the reoccurring nature of depression phases is helping prevent and decrease the level of the depression frequency.
